HOVLAND TO OPEN PLAY AT LET THEM PLAY CLASSIC ON THURSDAY

5/19/2021 4:00:00 PM

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama women's golfer Julie Hovland will compete in the Barstool Sports Let Them Play Classic at Whirlwind Golf Club May 20-21 in Chandler, Ariz.

The tournament, hosted by Barstool Sports, is hosting a large section of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional field participants and teams that did not advance to the NCAA Championships. The Baton Rouge Regional was canceled after tournament officials deemed The University Club's course unplayable to championship-caliber standards.

The Let Them Play Classic will be played at Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass in Chandler, Ariz. The 54-hole event will take place on both of WGC's 18-hole courses, with 36 holes on Thursday followed by the final round on Friday.

"The emotional roller coaster the last week of not getting to play, and the way it all transpired and just having your season end like that was tough,? head coach Matt Luther said. "Especially, Julie was tied for third going into the final round of the (Sun Belt) conference championship and didn't get to play there. Coming off of that and the sort of beat down from all of that, and then to turn around and in 48 hours have this tournament pop up with all the eyeballs that have come with it has just been awesome. I'm just super excited that she gets to take one last ride this year; she has definitely earned it. It is a great opportunity for her with the way the golf world has taken notice of this event. There are a lot of eyes watching it, and it's a great opportunity to just showcase what she has to the world.?

Hovland, the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Year, finished tied for third at the Sun Belt Conference Championship, April 18-20 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a three-round, 4-under par total of 140 after the final round was canceled due to unplayable course conditions. It marked her fourth consecutive top-five finish of the spring. Hovland will enter the NCAA postseason with a 71.46 stroke average in nine events this season, which encompasses 26 rounds.

She earned individual medalist honors at two events this season, the USA Intercollegiate and the Lady Red Wolves Classic, and finished runner-up at the UNF Collegiate. Hovland has recorded 14 rounds under par this season.
