NEW ORLEANS – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team collected four postseason awards, as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon. The team was highlighted by Coach of the Year Nick Brochu and Newcomer of the Year Julien Evrard.
After leading the Jaguars to their third consecutive Sun Belt Championship, Brochu has now been named the 2021 SBC Coach of the Year. Brochu made his way into the USA history books as he is the third men's tennis coach to be named Coach of the Year since 2002. Brochu holds a career-coaching record at South Alabama that stands at 195-127. His overall career record is now 261-170 in his 18 years as a head coach.
No. 90 Julien Evrard was named the Sun Belt's Newcomer of the Year and was tabbed to the first-team all-Sun Belt in singles after his stellar season with the Jaguars. Evrard has been named Player of the Week on three occasions with the Jags and has overcome two ranked opponents, No. 30 Giovanni Oradini of No. 17 Mississippi State on Feb. 13 and No. 62 Chase Ferguson of No. 29 South Florida on Feb. 26. The Lille, France, native was 19-7 overall in singles play, with 10 of those victories coming at the No. 1 position.
No. 79 Clément Marzol was named to the first-team all-Sun Belt in singles for the third time in his career. Marzol was previously given the honor during the 2017-19 seasons. The senior was outstanding this season as he went 18-4 overall in singles action. The Toulouse, France, native recorded two singles victories over ranked opponents, No. 17 Mississippi State's No. 54 Nemanja Malesevic and No. 37 Jakub Wojcik of No. 29 South Florida. Marzol is ranked third in the conference at the No. 2 spot with an 8-1 record and a .889-win percentage. He concluded the season with a five-match winning streak.
Doubles team No. 56 Marzol and Loïc Cloes were selected as the league's first-team all-Sun Belt in doubles for the third time in their career as a pair. The duo posted an overall 10-2 record at the No. 1 position in doubles action. The pair ranks second in conference play with a 3-1 record and a .750-win percentage and second overall with a 10-2 record and a .833-win percentage.
Senior Cloes and sophomore Sébastien Collard earned spots to the second-team all-Sun Belt in singles, with Collard earning the award for the first time in his career.Â
Cloes previously was given the honor during his freshman year in the 2016-17 season. Cloes is currently the best in the league in conference play with a perfect 3-0 record at No. 3 singles and third overall (3-0) in singles action. The senior concluded the season with an overall 9-7 record after earning his fifth consecutive singles win over Troy's Amer Bedwan in the SBC Semifinals.
Collard had an excellent season with the Jags as he holds a team-best 20-6 overall record in singles. During the fall season, the sophomore was undefeated with a perfect 9-0 record. The Gatineau, Quebec, Canada native is the top in the conference at the No. 4 position with a 3-0 record and second overall (3-0). Collard closed out the season on a seven-match winning streak after defeating Georgia State's Andrei Duarte in the SBC Championship match on court four.
