MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women's basketball coach Terry Fowler announced Thursday that Destiny Haymer has signed a grant-in-aid and will join the program in the fall.
Haymer is transferring from Cincinnati and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
"Destiny comes from Cincinnati, where she was playing at a high level prior to suffering a season-ending injury. Prior to Cincinnati, she started for a championship program at Jones Junior College," Fowler said. "She has a high basketball IQ and is competitive, and she gives us some versatility because she can play at all three guard spots. Destiny loves to play the game, I'm real excited about her being a part of the program. She is a great young lady who is happy to be back in this area so her family can see her play. This is a win-win situation for both of us."
In her lone season with the Bearcats, Haymer posted averages of 7.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.2 steals in 26.9 minutes per game while starting all nine contests she appeared in. The 5-foot-8 guard scored in double figures in four of those games, recording a season-best 13 points against Marquette after going 6-of-10 from the floor while finishing with 11 points — as well as eight assists and seven rebounds, both season-high totals — in a win at Temple. She also scored 10 points against both Wichita State and Central Florida in American Athletic Conference play.
Considered the 12th-ranked junior-college prospect by All Star Girls Report (ASGR) Basketball, Haymer was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Two-Year All-America team, and was selected first-team all-region and second-team all-Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) after averaging 11.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game her sophomore season at Jones (Miss.) C.C. Her efforts that year helped the Bobcats to a 24-4 overall record and the No. 8 seed in the national tournament that would end up cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a freshman, she recorded 12.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per outing to be chosen first-team all-region and all-MACJC as JC finished 28-3 after advancing to the second round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament. Haymer posted a triple-double with 13 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in the Bobcats' win over No. 24 Three Rivers (Mo.) C.C. in the first round of the national tournament, then scored a season-high 21 points against New Mexico J.C. in her final game with the program. At the end of the year she was chosen to play in the NJCAA All-Star Game.
Haymer was selected the 2017-18 Gatorade Mississippi Player of the Year and was also named to the Clarion-Ledger's "Dandy Dozen" after averaging 16.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 4.8 steals as a senior at Holmes County Central H.S. The Tchula, Miss., resident also helped lead the Jaguars to the 5A state championship her sophomore year while finishing her prep career with 10 triple-doubles and a quadruple-double.
Haymer joins a group of six incoming freshman in the Jaguars' 2021-22 recruiting class: Emani Burks (Melbourne, Fla.), Trinity Garrett (Spring Branch, Texas), Nadia Howard (Grayson, Ga.), Deborah Reese (Fort Pierce, Fla.), Jordan Rosier (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Ty Williams (New Orleans, La.).
The Jaguars have recorded an overall record of.500 or better four straight years after going 13-13 last season following an opening-round victory at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
