TEMPE, Ariz. – University of South Alabama men's tennis student-athletes Julien Evrard and Clément Marzol are both in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Tennis Rankings released on Tuesday afternoon. Doubles team Loïc Cloes and Marzol also moved up in the ITA doubles rankings as they are now ranked No. 39.
"They have been working really hard this season, said head coach Nick Brochu. "Earning a ranking is already hard, but improving a ranking and maintaining it is extremely difficult because once you get a ranking like Loic and Clem, everyone starts trying to take shots at them. However, they are making sure that they stay in the top 50. It's very good to see them improving, working hard and getting wins. You have to make sure you beat the players in front of you, and you have to make sure you don't lose to anyone behind you. They're doing a great job."
Evrard is ranked No. 79 and Marzol is ranked No. 110. They are the only two from the Sun Belt Conference in the top 125.
A Lille, France native, Evrard, has won 15 of his last 21 singles matches this season, with four of his victories coming in straight sets. He has also recorded two singles wins over ranked opponents No. 122 Maxime Lapraille of Florida Atlantic (6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4) on Feb., 7 and No. 36 Giovanni Oradini of Mississippi State in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) on Feb. 14.
Evrard was also 2-0 in singles action this weekend as he defeated Troy's Pelayo Antuna in straight sets (6-3,6-1) on court two and Ivailo Keremedchiev of Louisiana (7-5,6-3) at the No. 1 position.
Marzol, a Toulouse, France native, posted a 15-4 overall singles record as he assisted in South's victories over Troy and Louisiana last weekend. Teaming with partner Cloes, the doubles pair defeated Trojans Antuna and Vito Llinares 6-1 on court one. The duo cruised to their fifth consecutive doubles win as they claimed a 6-2 victory over Xandy Hammitt and Orio Fillat Gimenez of Louisiana. Doubles team Marzol and Cloes have won six of their seven doubles matches as a pair this season.
Marzol's remarkable performance didn't stop there as his 6-3, 6-4 singles victory over Ragin' Cajun Karlo Kajin on court two clinched the match for the Jags (4-0).
"Julien and Clem have been so consistent this year," said Brochu. "Julien was able to get some big wins, so he definitely deserves that ranking being the top 80 in the country. This year we have a very solid team and I am very glad for them to be in the rankings."
South Alabama will return to action on Fri., April 2 at 2 p.m. at they take on Georgia State in Troy, Ala.
