NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama senior Yu Fujioka was named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced on Wednesday afternoon.
Fujioka's performance was impeccable this past weekend as she was 2-0 in both singles and doubles play in conference play against Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Teaming with doubles partner Nikola Kohoutova, the duo defeated Elizabeth Goines and Sonja Keranen of Georgia Southern 6-1 on court two to give the Jaguars the doubles point. Fujioka extended the Jaguars' lead to 3-0, with her singles victory coming in straight sets against Georgia Southern's Paula Boixader (6-3,6-2) on court one.
After moving up to court one in the doubles lineup, the doubles pair, Fujioka and Kohoutova, recorded their second consecutive doubles victory (6-2) against Eva Chivu and Maddy Frediani of Georgia State. The Funabashi, Japan, native earned her fourth consecutive singles victory against Chivu (6-1,6-1), making it her eighth match to come in straight sets this season.
In singles play on court one, Fujioka has now won 10 of her last 13 singles matches. Fujioka currently leads the Jaguars in singles play with an overall 11-3 record.
Fujioka and the Jaguars will return to action on Wed., March 31 as they take on Troy at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, Ala.
