MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team doubles-pairing of Loïc Cloes and Clèment Marzol were ranked No. 46 in the ITA Collegiate Top 80 National Doubles rankings, as announced by the organization on Wednesday afternoon.
"It's good to see them in the rankings, especially in the top 50", said head coach Nick Brochu. "These two are our team captains, and they've won two conference championships. They are very great team plays and are always putting the team first, but at the same time, they always keep their individual goals in mind."Â
Cloes and Marzol have won four of their last doubles matches as a pair this season, with all four victories coming at the No. 1 position. The doubles team defeated Maxime Lapraille and Filip Krolo of Florida Atlantic 7-6(6) on Feb., 7 to give the Jaguars the doubles' point.
"They've been to the NCAA in doubles, so they definitely want to go there since this is their last season," stated Brochu. "They've been working hard. It's a long, tough season, but they've been able to manage and battle through adversities, and they deserve that ranking."
Reunited as a duo against the Blazers, Cloes and Marzol cruised to a 6-1 victory over Roman Postolka and Michal Lusovsky of UAB on Feb. 20. The seniors were instrumental to South's 7-0 victory over the Blazers as they each earned victories in singles play, with Marzol's win coming in straight sets (6-4,6-2) and Cloes's victory ending in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 7-5).
The doubles team defeated Trey Hilderbrand and Gabriel Decamps of No.19 Central Florida 6-4 on court one on Tues., March 9. The duo picked up their second consecutive doubles win on Thurs., March 11, as they cruised to a 6-0 win over Florida Atlantic's Maxime Lapraille and Filip Krolo on court one.
Cloes and Marzol were ranked 52nd in the preseason rankings released earlier this season on Jan. 13.
"They have more opportunities to improve that ranking," said Brochu. "We have six matches left, and they are going to be playing some ranked opponents. They are very motivated and excited, and I very proud of them for being in the top 50."
The Jaguars will return to action this weekend as they host Troy on Friday at 2 p.m. and Louisiana on Sunday at 11 a.m.
