MOBILE, Ala. – After recording a pair of wins in the season-opening match at Florida State, Julien Evrard was named the week's Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday afternoon. The honor is the first for Evrard since joining the program and the fourth weekly league honor of his career as he was selected as the Mountain West Player of the Week on three occasions during his time at Nevada.
"Julian [Evrard] was named Sun Belt Player of the Week, and he deserves it, "said Brochu. "Julian transferred to us in August. He has very high expectations for his college career, and now he's a graduate student with an opportunity to play, so we are very fortunate to have him on the team. He's a leader on the court, and he's a great player. He had great wins during the fall, he continues to work hard, and now it's paying off."
Evrard defeated Richard Thongoana of Florida State in three sets at the No. 2 position (6-3, 2-6, 6-3) in Tallahassee, Fla. His victory was the lone point in singles action for the Jaguars during the day.
"He had a great win against Florida State," said Brochu. "He's going to be one of our top players this season. He has high goals and high expectations for the team, but he also has high expectations for himself. He wants to achieve a national-ranking title while also helping to lead this team. His goal is to win a conference championship because that's one thing that he didn't have during his previous four years. He knows that he's on a team that has won a championship title in the last two years, and he's going to do everything to help this team win another championship. He works extremely hard and deserved this award. I wouldn't be surprised to see him continue performing at a high level throughout the season."
Evrard has beaten seven of his last 10 opponents in singles play and is 7-3 in doubles this season with his partner Collard.
In addition to his singles victory, the Lille, France native, and his teammate, Sébastien Collard posted to a 6-4 victory and gave the Jags' the doubles point against the Seminoles.
Evrard and the rest of his Jaguar teammates will return to action this weekend when they host Florida Atlantic on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m.
