JAGUARS ATIAS AND ZAYSZLY SET SCHOOL RECORDS AT SAMFORD MULTIS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of South Alabama track and field programs had two Jags establish new school records at the multis-discipline portion of the Samford Invite Thursday and Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex. Freshman Ariel Atias set a new program record with 5,172 points and a first-place finish in the heptathlon, while redshirt freshman Joey Zayszly accumulated 4,905 points in the pentathlon and claimed sixth in the school's all-time records.

NOTES
- Atias's record-breaking performance came in his collegiate debut. He won the shot put portion of the heptathlon with a 14.09m mark and tied for first-place in the high jump with a mark of 1.92m. He also won the pole vault with a 4.40m mark and took second place in the long jump with a jump of 6.91m.
- Zayszly earned a victory in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.46s. He was also the runner-up in the 60m (7.21s) and the 1000m (2:52.53), and recorded a personal-best in the long jump (6.35m).
- Bryan Shirley scored 4,211 points in the pentathlon, and recorded a personal-best in the long jump with a distance of 6.28m. He was also .01m short from his personal-best in the high jump.
- Rocio Chaparro broke three of her personal records: 60m hurdles (9.12s), high jump (1.51m) and shot put (11.25m). She finished the day with a total of 3,305 points.
- All four Jaguars recorded personal-bests at the Samford Multis.

UP NEXT
- South Alabama will send student-athletes to compete in the Scarlett and Black Invitational in State University, Ark. and the KMS Invitational in Birmingham on Jan. 31.

- On Atias's performance: "Ariel is such a dedicated and hard working athlete. It was no surprise that he did well."

- On Zayszly's performance: "This was his first indoor heptathlon competition. He has a lot of potential and is going to keep improving."
