Opening Kick
• South plays the last of three straight non-conference games against teams that participated in a postseason bowl game in 2019.
• The match-up with the Blazers is the second half of a home-and-home agreement between the two schools, with the programs also scheduled to meet again in 2030 (Sept. 14 in Mobile) and '31 (Sept. 6 in Birmingham).
• It's the second of two contests for the Jaguars against a Conference USA opponent after opening the campaign with a win at Southern Mississippi Sept. 3.
• This marks the first occasion since the 2014 campaign — when USA played both Mississippi State and South Carolina — that the Jags will take on two teams from the same league in non-conference action.
• In addition to hosting Southern Miss in the season opener next fall, the Jaguars also have upcoming series slated with C-USA members Louisiana Tech (2022 in Mobile and '27 in Ruston) and North Texas (2024 in Mobile and '25 in Denton).

South Alabama/UAB Connections
• Blazer DL Tyree Turner appeared in 40 games over the previous five seasons for the Jaguars, departing Mobile ranked sixth on the program's all-time list for tackles for loss (22) and tied for seventh in sacks (nine).
• UAB head coach Bill Clark was South's defensive coordinator from 2009-12 — the Jags' first four seasons of competition — before becoming the head coach at Jacksonville State.
• Blazer assistants Bryant Vincent (2011-13, '15-17) and Richard Owens (2015-17) served as full-time assistant coaches on former USA head coach Joey Jones' staff.
• In two years as a Jaguar, UAB assistant coach Jay Mitchell recorded 56 stops, four interceptions and seven other passes broken up as South went a combined 17-0 during the 2009 and '10 campaigns.
• Eight Blazers transferred from UAB to South Alabama after the former shut down its program in December 2014, with the trio of TE Gerald Everett, S Kalen Jackson and WR Josh Magee helping the Jags earn an invitation to the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl in 2016.

Notes From The Last UAB Meeting
• The Jaguars ran for 66 yards in the opening quarter — QB Cephus Johnson accounted for 41 of those on six carries before departing with an injury — but gained just 41 yards on the ground over the final three periods.
• USA RB Tra Minter led the team in both rushing and receptions for the third time in four contests to open the 2019 campaign.
• The Jags' Nick Mobley matched a career high in tackles at the time while leading all players in stops.
• The Blazers' converted an opponent season-best 69.2 percent (9-of-13) on third downs.
• South's 47 plays in the contest equaled the fewest the offense had ever run in a game at the time.

Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 165-73 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.

Baker Brings His Best In Home Opener
Kawaan Baker finished with career bests of seven catches for 129 yards — both game-high totals — with a touchdown in the Jaguars' game against Tulane last time out.  He caught a 34-yard pass on South's first snap of the night to put the offense inside the Green Wave five-yard line, while his 34-yard reception early in the second quarter provided the first touchdown ever at Hancock Whitney Stadium in giving the Jags a 7-0 lead.  Baker added a 27-yard catch later in the period as he moved up three spots into fourth place on USA's all-time list for receiving yards (he now has 1,381) while becoming the sixth individual in program history to go over 2,000 all-purpose yards in a career with the effort.

Mobley Makes A Move As Well
After leading all players in the Tulane game with nine total stops, Mobley became the first Jag to pace South's defense in tackles in each of the first two games of the year since Jeremy Reaves did so during the 2017 season.  Not only was it the eighth occasion since the start of last year that he has turned the trick, but with the performance he moved into the top 10 on the school's career tackles list as he now has 170 since the start of the 2018 campaign.

Tolbert's Time
Although junior Jalen Tolbert came up one yard shy of becoming the first individual in the program to post 100-plus receiving yards in three straight outings, after catching six balls — equaling a career high set in the Jags' season-opening victory at Southern Miss — for 99 yards he has now taken over as the all-time leader in school history with an average of 19.30 yards per reception (minimum 40).  After the first three weeks of the season, he and Baker rank third and fifth, respectively, in the nation in total receiving yards.

Davis Digs Starting Role
Carlos Davis has now rushed for over 80 yards in each of South's first two games — a feat he accomplished just once in 12 outings a year ago — after gaining 82 yards on 16 carries against the Green Wave.  The sophomore running back also contributed four receptions for 46 yards in the contest, giving him a career-best 128 all-purpose yards on the night, and after recording a run for 25 yards and catch for 32 more the trio of Davis, Baker and Tolbert have accounted for 13 of the team's 14 plays of 20-plus yards in the first two games of the year.

Young And Restless
Tré Young finished with a career-high five solo stops while equaling a previous best, first set at Troy on Oct. 16 last fall, with six total tackles against Tulane.  The senior added a pair of passes broken up as well — the first occasion since joining the program last year that he has been credited with more than one in a contest — with both coming on third down, which contributed to the Jaguar defense limiting the Green Wave to just a 9.1 percent (1-of-11) conversion rate in the game.  It was the first time since defeating Jackson State last season that the unit has held the opposition to just one third-down conversion as well as the lowest success rate allowed by South's defense since Georgia State was 0-for-10 on Nov. 30, 2013.

Airing It Out
Sophomore Desmond Trotter threw for 74 yards in the opening quarter in the match-up with the Green Wave before Chance Lovertich came on to complete 18-of-29 attempts for 247 yards and a pair of scores over the final three periods of the contest.  After the duo combined to record 363 yards through the air in the victory over Southern Miss to open the year, it marked the first occasion that the Jags have thrown for 300 or more yards in back-to-back games in school history.
