UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/6

Date: 8/6
Time: 3:15 p.m.-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Players of the Day: Desmond Trotter, So., QB, Irondale, Ala., and Chance Lovertich, Jr., QB, Brandon, Miss.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Trotter and Lovertich: "We had two guys who ran out in the first group who were really good today, and that was Desmond and Chance.  I thought they were sharp, they got guys in the right spots and they threw balls that were very catchable."

Defensive Player of the Day: Quentin Wilfawn, Jr., LB, Oxford, Miss.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Wilfawn: "Quentin came out and made some plays.  We're expecting him to be an early leader, there were a couple of times today where we were flat and he picked us up.  We're also looking for him to make some plays quickly, and he got his hands on some balls in the red zone.  I thought he had a really good day."

Play of the Day: During the first team period, Lovertich rolled out to his left and connected with Jalen Tolbert on a 45-yard score as he got the ball off just before a defender was able to get to him. Also considered on the day was a pass break up by Tré Young when the senior safety stepped filled the passing lane to impede a would-be completion to Kawaan Baker.

Team period highlights: South ran two 12-minute team periods with the first 16-play session concentrating on tempo while the 23-play second session closed out the day.

Miscellaneous Notes
- For the second time in as many days, the practice was split into two sessions, with the first group on the field for the first hour and the second unit working out the final 60 minutes.
-The two sessions were split by a four-minute special teams session with the placekickers working on kicks ranging from 21-yards to 36-yards.
-During the first 7-on-7 skeleton drill session, the Jaguar quarterbacks hit their first 12 passes with Lovertich completing all 10 of his attempts.
-The string of completions would have been longer had it not been for a pair of drops.
-The lone score during the session came when Trotter dropped in a 15-yard pass to Baker in the right corner of the end zone.
-The defense also came up with some plays during the period registering a pair of coverage sacks, a pass break up and an interception by junior defensive back Darrell Luter, Jr.
-The defense held the advantage in the second 7-on-7 skeleton drill as the group forced the offense into six-straight incompletions after Cameron Hatcher-Owen's short reception to open the segment.
-Wilfawn ended the 24-play drill with back-to-back pass break ups. The junior linebacker would also be credited with a pass defensed during the team period to give him three on the day.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On thoughts on the second day of camp: "We came out in two groups, I thought the Red group had a really good day; it was there best day including all of our walkthroughs and the first two practices; the made some progress.  The Blue group didn't have quite as good a day, but that group includes a lot of younger guys.  It was a good day in shorts, but tomorrow we'll be ready to put the pads on and see exactly where we're at.  It will be the first time we've had pads on since Thanksgiving, I know the guys are excited about getting closer to real football."
-On the focus on tempo during team periods: "Tempo and conditioning are important on both sides of the ball, with our current circumstances with COVID-19 I know the teams that are in the best condition are definitely going to be the teams that have the best opportunity for success, especially early.  We've been working tempo hard, that's something that is important to us and that we wanted to stress.  It's one thing to run tempo, but another to execute; what we have to get done is being able to play faster while still executing."
-On where he saw progress Thursday: "With the Red group, I thought we threw and caught really well; we completed 12 straight balls during the skeleton [7-on-7] period.  The quarterbacks in that group knew where to go with the football and did a good job of getting it there so that our receivers could make some plays.  With the second group I thought I saw some better underneath coverage, our linebackers did a better job in their drops.  There was some improvement on both sides."

Junior LB A.J. DeShazor
-On how happy he is to be playing football again: "You see it all over the media that other fall sports are coming back, but I know everybody is ready for college football and the NFL.  Beyond that, it just feels great to be back with my brothers.  We have a lot of returning players this year, we have depth and a lot of guys who are focused and ready to go."
-On what the Jag defense is focusing on improving: "In watching film from last year during the quarantine, we need to make sure we are attacking the ball with reckless abandon.  You have to think, but there is a certain point in the game where its's going to come down to who is pushing who harder and knocking people back.  Everybody is not returning to practice at the same time, so the team that is going to be more physical for all four quarters is going to be the one that is successful in the end."
-On his comfort in his second year at 'Rover': "There's not much difference [compared to playing inside] from the standpoint of attacking the line of scrimmage, the difference at 'Rover' is that you have to be more patient and know your reads.  When you're facing the RPO how can you play mind games with the quarterback and make sure that you are in the right position but still able to affect what the offense is doing.  It's about being patient but at the same time attacking when it's necessary."

Junior WR Jalen Tolbert
-On the first couple days of practice: "Everybody is coming out here working and competing.  We are working with two groups right now and that is getting a lot of young guys reps.  Everybody is out here getting better, we're excited to be working and getting ready for the season."
-On the competition at wide receiver: "We support each other and work off of each other, whether it's the ones, twos or threes everybody is competing.  We have a lot of young guys who've come in who will be able to help us out this season, so we have a deep group."

Up next: South Alabama will be back on the practice field in shells Friday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Football Practice Facility.
