Date: 8/13
Time: 7:15-8:45 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Hancock Whitney Stadium
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)
Offensive Player of the Day: Jacob Shoemaker, Sr., OL, Gulfport, Miss.
-
Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Shoemaker: "I thought we did a really nice job up front, we had some guys out and we had some guys step up in their place. It was good to see Braden Moody back out there, but I think Jacob Shoemaker had another really good day."
Defensive Player of the Day: Keon Voisin, So., S, Crestview, Flaa.
-
Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Voisin: "Keon is a guy last year who didn't get to play a lot because he had a hard time getting the plays down and communicating. He's done an excellent job of that during this camp and he keeps making plays every day. I'm really proud of him."
Play of the Day: Midway through the final team period Keith Gallmon came across the field and reached in to free the ball, preventing a 20-yard completion down the right sideline.
Team period highlights: Both 10-minute team periods on the night saw the offense running a mix of run and pass plays against the defense.
Miscellaneous Notes
-Davyn Flenord and Darrell Luter Jr. joined Gallmon in breaking up passes during the last team period, while Chris Henderson and Charles Coleman III were credited with sacks.
-Both Jag quarterbacks were able to complete a pass under pressure for a long gain in that period, with Desmond Trotter finding Mo Edwards Jr. for 30 yards and Chance Lovertich connecting with Jalen Wayne for 40 yards.
-Lovertich threw for three touchdowns on the night, with two coming during 7-on-7 passing drills and the third in the first team period of the practice.
-In the first team period, Keon Voisin was able to pick off a pass for the defense's only takeaway of the evening; he also broke up another pass during skeleton passing drills earlier in the workout.
-Latarius "Kado" Carr added a sack in the period, which ended with Christian Bell and Jamie Sheriff combining for a tackle in the offensive backfield.
-On the snap prior to that play, Lovertich threw a 45-yard strike to Jamel Thomas for a touchdown.
-Devin Rockette and Jaden Voisin broke up pass attempts on back-to-back plays during the team's 7-on-7 period.
-Wayne and Jalen Tolbert caught three passes each to lead all Jaguar receivers in the session.
-South had special teams periods focusing on both punt coverage and kickoff returns during the workout as well.
-All practices are closed to the general public.
Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Thursday night's practice: "I thought the guys responded really well after a 106-play scrimmage last night, they had a lot of energy and enthusiasm; they came out and played really hard. We executed some things offensively that we did not do well last night, so I saw some improvement and was pleased. We had a good little inside run period, and we had two team periods where the offense and defense competed and played really hard against each other."
-On the areas he is focusing on improvement with another scrimmage on Saturday: "Defensively there are some penalty issues we have to clean up, we had too many offsides — we just weren't watching the ball — we had a facemask or two, and we need to clean up our tackling technique. We have to button up our pass protection and our pad level offensively, and there were a couple of reads we need to make in the backfield."
-On who stood out in Wednesday's scrimmage after watching film: "I thought Carlos Davis had a good night, he ran the ball well and picked up some good, tough yards. All three of the Voisins made plays. Keon knocked a ball out on a big third-down conversion; we hit Destin Myers on a little spot route and he put his helmet right on the ball and almost created a turnover, but it got the defense off the field. Jaden had an interception, and Devin had a good third-down conversion and made a good play on a reverse. Brock Higson did some good things, Davyn Flenord showed that he can be a really good player at corner and I thought Darrell Luter played well at the other corner."
Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield
-On his thoughts on last night's scrimmage after watching film: "For the first scrimmage on day seven of camp, I think we executed fairly well and I liked that the most. We had some negative yardage plays and other things like that, but that was due more to the fact that we had some second [unit] guys in with the other group. I really liked the way we executed. We had nine explosive plays, which I thought was really good. Of course, the negative is that we had five turnovers, four of which were very preventable; one was a dropped snap, one was a toss to a running back that hit him in his hands but his eyes were up, and then we had two interceptions that were just misread all the way. That's the key. If we can protect the ball and hit explosive plays with the defense that we have, we have a chance to be really good."
-On what he wants to see out of Saturday's second scrimmage with the quick turnaround: "First of all, let's eliminate those turnovers. Secondly, I want to build on the explosive plays and I'd like to cut down on the negative yardage plays. I think we can do that and do a better job of calling some protections to help us, so we're going to try to do that on this second scrimmage."
-On what has stood out to him thus far through camp that he wasn't necessarily expecting: "I guess I'd say the play of both the quarterbacks that are getting most of the reps. Without having a spring and just going through Zoom meetings and workouts on their own, I've been really impressed with the way they've improved. Chance, of course picking everything up that quickly, and Dez has looked like an experienced quarterback. After only having played four games [at the end of last season] I don't know that I was expecting that much. His pocket-awareness is much better and he seems like he's just understanding things better and is playing with more confidence, so I'm excited about that."
Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart
-On where he feels his defense is after watching film of the first scrimmage: "The biggest improvement that I saw from last night was that our corners have gotten a lot better; they made some plays. We have some new corners and I thought they did a great job in making plays down the field and getting ball out. We had a couple of interceptions and created some other turnovers. I thought we had good pressure up front. In the past when the offense would put the ball on the ground in the backfield, we wouldn't get there, but we did last night. We do a 'Havoc' rating where we rate big plays, batted passes, sacks and tackles for loss, and last night we actually were way over our percentage that we want to achieve every week. We have a little more athleticism than we've had; we just got to keep getting better every day."
-On what he wants to see out of Saturday's second scrimmage with the quick turnaround: "The biggest thing that you don't want to have happen in the first game is to be out of shape. With the quick turnaround, I want to see our guys be consistent and play hard. I thought we played hard in the first scrimmage. We've now had a quick turnaround with practice tonight and tomorrow and then the scrimmage on Saturday. I want to see people play hard every snap no matter if they get tired, you have to push yourself through it."
-On if any area has surprised him so far in camp: "The front. We lost some really good guys up front from last year, we have some young guys including true freshmen who are out making plays. I think that we have enough numbers, enough people on the defensive line that we have been able to keep them fresh. They are the group that has done more than what was expected by me."
