MOBILE, Ala. – Guided by a strong defensive effort, South Alabama brought the fight to North Texas but could not do enough to catch up late in a 36-22 defeat Saturday afternoon at DATCU Stadium.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 1-4 on the season.
KEY MOMENTS
- Facing a fourth and goal from the two-yard line on its opening possession, South Alabama quarterback Bishop Davenport punched the ball into the end zone to give the Jags an early, 7-0 lead.
- With North Texas threatening to score to start the second quarter, Trent Thomas recorded a tackle for loss and then a sack on back-to-back plays to back the Mean Green out of field goal range and force a punt. The stop kept the game tied at 7-7.
- On North Texas' first possession of the second half, safety Christopher Wallace Jr. made a big hit on a Mean Green receiver over the middle to force a fumble. Dalton Hughes jumped on the loose ball for the recovery to keep it a one-score game.
- After UNT took a 21-14 lead, the Jags responded with a 12-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to pull within a touchdown. Davenport hit Rod Gibbs in the end zone on a one-yard touchdown pass.
- Kentrel Bullock found the end zone on a two-yard rush with 6:11 remaining in the fourth quarter to pull the Jags within one score. His touchdown run capped a 10-play, 87-yard drive.
- North Texas answered South's final touchdown with one of its own, and then forced a stop on the Jags' last possession to win the game 36-22.
KEY STATS
- North Texas won the total yardage batter 429-396 despite the Jags outrushing the Mean Green by a count of 204-195.
- The Jaguars were plagued by untimely penalties all game long, committing eight for eight yards compared to just five for 41 yards for North Texas.
- Tackling was a struggle for South Alabama in defeat. The Jags brought down the Mean Green 64 times compared to 76 total tackles for North Texas. UNT was also able to generate seven tackles for loss compared to just three for South.
NOTABLE
- South Alabama's opening touchdown drive was its first time finding the end zone on the first drive of the game since week two against Tulane
- Gibbs scored his first-career touchdown in the third quarter on a one-yard pass from Davenport. It was the fourth overall reception of Gibbs' career.
- Hughes' fumble recovery was the first of his career. It was also the first defensive takeaway for the Jaguars since week two against Tulane.
- Wallace set a new career high with 13 total tackles
- Micah Woods recorded his first-career reception in a South Alabama uniform in the fourth quarter to convert a key third down
QUOTABLE
"They fought hard and we had opportunities, but you just cannot fall asleep and get stagnant like that on offense when the defense is playing their butts off against a good offense. We didn't do anything in the first half, we got a couple scores in the second half. It started to get interesting and our defense got confidence. Then we had some penalties that killed us on the drive, and then that last drive there on defense, the water just kind of broke through the dam."

South Alabama will now turn its focus to the annual Battle for the Belt when it visits Troy on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
