UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/11

Date: 8/11
Time: 3:15-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Players of the Day: Tylan Morton, Jr., QB, Griffin, Ga., and Tanner McGee, R-Fr., QB, Randleman, N.C.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Morton and McGee: "Our quarterbacks have been doing a really nice job, but what I was most impressed with was the way Tylan and Tanner came out today.  They both did a really nice job when they got their opportunity, which was good to see.  Some of their reps have been cut, but both of them did a really nice job making plays today."

Defensive Player of the Day: Kelvin Johnson, Jr., LB, Griffin, Ga.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Johnson: "We had a split practice today.  Kelvin is learning two different positions, he came and asked me if he could go during both the practices in this 100-degree heat.  He came out here and made some plays at both positions, and that's the kind of people we are looking for on our team."

Play of the Day: During the last team period of the first half of practice, Desmond Trotter threw a pass just out of the reach of the defensive back and over the shoulder into the hands of Cade Sutherland, who was able to turn for a long gain up the left sideline.

Team period highlights: The first and final team periods of the afternoon had the offense calling a mix of runs and throws, while in between was a 10-minute passing period.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On Tuesday's practice: "I thought we got better today.  We came out in two groups, I thought the inside periods were good on both sides and that there was a lot of improvement since yesterday.  With both groups we had a team passing period and I thought we were better in our pass protection.  We did some good things defensively too, there were some definite positives on both sides.  Our conditioning was better, this was the third time we were out in the heat with pads on and I think the guys handled it and have shown each day they are getting better at fighting through it.  Our pad level is getting better.  It was a good day."
-On what he is happiest about after a full week of preseason camp: "I would say the retention.  We didn't have spring training, but we have met over Zoom an unbelievable number of times and the guys have retained a lot of the stuff that we installed back in March; I've been pleased with their ability to pick things up.  I'm happy with some of the transfers who have come in, we didn't get a chance to look at them in the spring but Darrell Luter and Jamie Sheriff are going to be very good players and guys like Trent Tyre and Dewayne Betts are definitely going to be able to help."
-On what he wants to see in the team's scrimmage on Wednesday: "Execution on both sides, and I want to see guys play hard knowing what to do.  Offensively I'd like to see a clean performance where we don't put a lot of balls on the ground and don't have a lot of busts.  I believe we have more weapons and explosive capability, I'd like to see us get the ball to those guys and then see those guys do something with it out in space once they have that opportunity.  I think our team speed has improved defensively, I want to see that too."

Sophomore RB Carlos Davis
-On his thoughts a week into camp: "I feel like we are progressing and getting better each and every day."
-On what the offense has done well and what it needs to do heading into tomorrow night's scrimmage: "Our offensive line has done really well this camp; they have created holes for the running backs to run through.  The quarterbacks have stepped up and been leaders for us.  As running backs, we just need to work on being patient and letting the game come to us."
-On his personal expectations for the fall: "I want to see more explosive runs and great blocks out of myself.  I also want to show leadership."

Junior S Keith Gallmon
-On how this camp has been different for him: "I've had to mold myself into more of a leader for our team vocally both on and off the field.  Our team has already formed a bond over the short time that we've been in camp, we've brought everybody together."
-On what he feels the defense has done well and what areas they need to continue to work on during camp: "We had miscommunications in the secondary a couple of times, but we've been able to pick it up.  The defensive line has done well and is getting good pressure on the quarterback and making them get the ball out quick.  As long as we continue to run to the ball and play hard, I feel that we'll be good."
-On what he's looking for out of the defense as they head into their first scrimmage: "I'm looking for us to create turnovers.  I want to see our defensive line continue to apply pressure and our secondary to get some picks.  I just want us to play hard and play fast."
-On being able to get on the field and play in Hancock Whitney tomorrow night: "It's truly a blessing for us to have that opportunity with everything going on.  We are going to be excited to get out there on the field for the first time.  It's going to be an honor and a blessing tomorrow."

Up next: South will take part in its first scrimmage of preseason camp Wednesday at Hancock Whitney Stadium beginning at 7:30 p.m.
