UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/10

Date: 8/10
Time:  9:30-11:20 a.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full Pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Offensive Line
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on the offensive line: "What was good to see today was the play of the offensive line. I thought they came out and had a really good mentality and were ready to go today. I thought Jacob Shoemaker had a really good day today. I want to watch the film to make sure, but I saw them finishing a lot more blocks. We're going to be better if we do that this season."

Defensive Player of the Day: Tré Young, Sr., DB, Mobile, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Young: "One of the things we've been trying to stress is turnovers and making big plays, and today Tré made a huge play on the sideline during one of our team periods.  It was a big-time play, when you start doing those things it becomes contagious and we had a couple more of them.  I saw him make some other plays today where he was moving fast and playing the way Jaguar football is supposed to be played."

Play of the Day: On the first play of the second team period, linebacker Chris Henderson was able to knock the ball out of Jaguar quarterback Chance Lovertich's arm, which was then snagged out of the air by senior defensive lineman Jeremiah Littles.

Team period highlights: For the first time during camp, South Alabama had three 10-minute team periods which each consisted of 16 plays.

Miscellaneous Notes
-Monday marked the first day in full pads for the Jaguars.
-South's placekickers had a five-minute period working on extra points and field goals from various distances.
-The Jaguar offense struck for two big pass plays during the first team period with Desmond Trotter connecting with Cade Sutherland for a 40-yard gain, and Lovertich splitting two defenders to hit Kawaan Baker for a ball that got down inside the five yard line.
-Junior linebacker Nick Mobley was credited with four tackles and a sack during the first two team periods.
-During the 16-play 7-on-7 skeleton drill the defense was credited with five pass breakups.
-After missing his first three passes during the 7-on-7, Lovertich closed out the session by hitting six of his final seven attempts, which included scoring strikes to Nae'Saan Dickerson, Devin Voisin and Mo Edwards, Jr.
-Dickerson and Voisin's scores came on back-to-back plays and both were from 22 yards out.
-Tré Young registered three tackles over the final two team periods and had an interception during the first.
-Henderson was credited with two sacks and another tackle for loss during the team periods.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the first day in full pads: "It was a really good first day in full gear. This was the first day that we've been in full gear since the day after Thanksgiving. It was hot this morning, but I thought the players handled the heat really well for being in full gear for the first time. We had a 10-minute period early on in practice where we allowed the defense to tackle, which was the first time they've tackled since last year and I thought they did some good things. I thought we also had some explosive plays offensively also.  I like where we're at after five days (of camp), but we still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do, but they guys are working hard and their attitudes are tremendous. We've made improvements since Saturday, and that's what we want to do. We want to just get a little bit better every day."
-On his approach with his team with the uncertainty right now: "I just told our guys that I'm here, I'm good and I'm ready to go. I'm counting on them as players to communicate to us as coaches about where they're at. Everyone one of them has told me that they're ready to roll and ready to play. They say that we're in a great situation. We're blessed to have been able to test really well during this time. We're going to keep taking it one day at a time."
-On the improvements he saw from Saturday to today: "The biggest improvement to me was the way we handled the heat. I thought the guys pushed themselves through, and I thought we executed better. Our alignments, assignments and communication from the sideline to the field were better. There were a lot of things that we got better at today because of the adversity we went through on Saturday. There was 96 percent humidity on Saturday and we needed another hot day because we saw where we were at and the things we needed to get better at, and today we did."

Senior OL Brian Ankerson
-On the offensive line this fall: "I think we're going to have an improved line from last year.  [Jacob] Shoemaker has moved from left tackle to right guard so we have a lot of experience on the interior, and we have Conner Estes back at right tackle where he finished out last year.  The only new guy we have is Wyatt Green at left tackle — there are a couple of other guys battling it out for that position — but he's picked it up lately and di well today."
-On improvement on the line since the start of preseason camp: "I would definitely say we have although we struggled a little bit Saturday, especially with conditioning and tempo.  But at the end of the day today everybody picked it up, we had very few missed assignments and were able to run the ball well."
-On the possibility of having the season cancelled: "I know everybody wants to play, right now whether we will or not is still up in the air.  But I know we want to play and we want to go through with this season."

Senior LB Riley Cole
-On if he is more comfortable playing inside this year: "I definitely love being back in the middle, that's where I was my first two years.  It's good to be back in there, I feel like I can run the field more and hopefully help the team win more that way."
-On his personal goals this year: "I just want to win.  If everybody can be on the same page on defense and we're rolling, I think the sky is the limit for us."
-On receiving preseason recognition: "It's more motivation, it makes me want to go harder because I have more eyes on me.  I feel like I'm in the spotlight so I need to go harder."

Junior LB Nick Mobley
-On South's linebackers on the first day in full pads: "We're a really strong group; I feel like that is the strength of the defense, but I'm a little biased.  We pushed through the heat, we come out here to do our best and improve every day."
-On the communication shown by the Jag defense Monday: "Communication, communication, communication.  If one person doesn't know what to do it's everyone's fault.  I know if we communicate and keep the energy up we can play at the level we expect to play at."
-On finally being able to put full pads on: "It was pretty good because we got to hit and tackle a little bit, that was exciting.  Telling a linebacker they can go full throttle makes it a good day."

Junior WR Jalen Tolbert
-On the team's first day in full pads: "It was a hard work day, everyone came out here and fought through the adversity of the heat.  But everybody came out here and competed and did what they were supposed to do."
-On improvement among USA's wide receivers: "Everybody is out here getting better, the young guys are starting to feel more comfortable in the offense.  The older guys continue to lead and make plays and show the young guys how we practice around here."
-On how he feels entering his junior season: "I'm just taking it day by day and trying to get one percent better every day.  I feel like I have a good opportunity in front of me with my teammates behind me, I think I can have a big year and hopefully help the team come out with different results than last year.  My first year I got hurt, when I came back there wasn't much success either for myself or as a team overall so to finish last year like that and come into this year strong is very exciting.  I'm just excited to see what happens this season."

Up next: South Alabama will return to the practice field Tuesday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Football Practice Facility.
