NEW ORLEANS – After helping the University of South Alabama men's basketball team to two victories that clinched the second seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Chad Lott was chosen the league's Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Lott led the Jaguars in scoring in both wins last week, also topping the team in rebounds once while shooting better than 70 percent from the floor as South defeated both Troy and Texas State to secure a berth in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The graduate transfer from Shreveport, La., averaged 19 points — making 17-of-24 shots from the field — and five rebounds in the two contests while adding four steals, a pair of assists and a blocked shot.
He topped all scorers with a season-high-tying 22 points while recording the highest field-goal percentage by a Jag (minimum five attempts) this year after going 9-of-10 from the floor Saturday against the Trojans, also pacing the team with six boards in the 78-63 victory. Needing a win on Tuesday in the regular-season finale against the Bobcats to earn the No. 2 seed in the Sun Belt Tournament, Lott once again posted a game-high scoring total with 16 points while adding four rebounds and three steals — one shy of matching his best total of the season in the latter category — as USA picked up a 58-54 win.
The 6-foot-4 guard has recorded 10 or more points on seven occasions while helping South end the regular-season with an eight-game winning streak, the program's longest entering postseason play since the 1979-80 campaign. The Jaguars' semifinal contest at the league tournament will tip off at 2 p.m. (CDT) on Saturday, March 14, at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
