Notes: A last-second penalty, with three seconds on the match official's watch, separated South from defeat at a soggy Sage Park pitch on Sept. 20. Junior Tilly Wilkes completed the comeback victory by using her head to send in senior Deanna Green's cross to finish the match about three minutes into the second overtime period. Troy had taken the two previous matches against South with one game on each team's home field, during the 2018 and 19 seasons, respectively. Both teams are coming off losses as Sunday Troy lost to Georgia Southern which was the first defeat on its home field Sunday since Texas State on Oct. 14, 2018. South's loss to Georgia State broke a nine-game home winning streak that also stretched back to 2018.
The University of South Alabama soccer team seeks to earn a league-double on the road at rival Troy on Sunday. The two teams met Sept. 20, at Sage Park in Mobile with the Jags claiming a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
The Trojans beat South last time the two teams met at Troy, but the most recent contest at the Troy Soccer Complex went in favor of the visiting Georgia Southern squad with a final score of 2-1.
NOTES
- Per Troy's athletic department release, the Troy Soccer Complex will allow approximately 50 percent capacity in the bleachers and fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to sit around the track. Face coverings are mandatory at all times and select pre-packaged food and drinks will be available at the concession stand.
- Against Georgia Southern (10/2), South added two more second half goals in the 2-0 victory. That brings the total of goals scored after the halftime intermission to 10, with one occurring in double-overtime.
- Of the Jags' four matches in the state of Alabama, three have gone to double-overtime.
- Eight student-athletes have started all six matches this season.
- Seven of those starters are returning players from the 2019 squad with junior Gabrielle Gayle transferring in and securing the starting position of center back with sophomore Leandra Flury.
- Two freshman, Kailey Littleford and Anita Gudmundsdottir, have started the five most recent matches played.
- Gudmundsdottir ranks fourth in Goals Against Average in the Sun Belt Conference with a 0.93 rating.
- Littleford rippled the mesh Friday night against Georgia Southern, recording her first goal. A week earlier, the freshman earned her first assist against Coastal Carolina.
- Junior Brenna McPartlan is in the top two in the Sun Belt Conference in the categories of shots, goals and points.
- Graduate student Athanasia Moraitou and junior Morgan Cross are tied for second in the conference with a team-leading three assists each.
- The pair are two of five players to register two assist in a single match in the league this year.
- Wilkes is tied with eight other players who have notched a pair of assists and is one position behind Moraitou and Cross in the conference statistics.
THEY SAID IT
Head Coach Richard Moodie
-
On game preparation: "Taking Troy out of the equation, we are coming off of a loss and that will make you want to come back and work harder. That motivation should be there regardless of the outcome in the previous match, but it just seems mentally to affect you more when you lose. In technical and tactical terms nothing will change in the training, but we need more intensity within those sessions with some areas of concern within normal training."
-
On the season this far: "The team did not really have expectations with this being a unique season between wondering if it would be canceled and just how shortened it is. The team has adjusted to the new standards required with keeping fit and being conscious of COVID-19; not just staying health but contact tracing guidelines too. We obviously want as high of a seed as possible, but the primary concern is how we are playing right now. We need to be improving game-to-game."
