NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama cross country runner Carolien Millenaar made history Thursday morning as she became the first female runner in program history to be named Sun Belt Conference Runner of the Week for the third time this season as announced by the league office.
The 5-foot-8 Sørvad, Denmark, native now has earned the honor five times throughout her career, passing former Jag Rebecca Beverly's career mark of four selections done during the 1996, '97 and '99 seasons.
Millenaar's selection marks the 19th selection by a female runner at South Alabama.
For the third time in as many races this fall, Millenaar set a new personal best with a time of 20:53.87 to place second in the women's 6k Gold race at the Blazer Classic held at Veterans Park.
Millenaar has led the South women in all three races this season, placing either first or second. In addition to setting a new 6k personal best, the second-place finish marked the 12th time in her 17 career races that she has finished inside the top 15.
Millenaar and the rest of her Jaguar teammates will now gear up to host the 2020 Sun Belt Conference Championships on Sat., Oct. 31 at the Old Brookley Gulf Pines Golf Course. The women's 5k race is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., and will be followed by the men's 8k race at 11 a.m.
