THEY SAID IT
Head coach Nick Brochu
- On Cloes and Marzol at the Alabama tournament:
"We were very fortunate to have our top two players invited to the Alabama tournament. Clém and Loïc are going to be facing players from some of the top programs in the country. Both players are guaranteed of playing four singles and three doubles matches. The tournament format is great because it's like a round-robin and you get to play a lot of high-level matches. There's less pressure on the players, because even if they drop a match, they will still keep playing. They will be able to play against ranked opponents so that will help them in their own rankings.
"It will be great preparation for Loïc who will be playing at the [ITA] Oracle [Master] later this month. The opportunity for them to play together in doubles will be important, because our expectation is for them to play in the ITA All-American tournament later this fall. They both put the team first and are great leaders for us, but at the same time, they do have goals themselves of earning national rankings for their play in singles and doubles. This weekend will be a great opportunity for both to play some ranked players and establish a national ranking right away."
- On the Thomasville Invitational:
"Thomasville is also a great tournament early on in the fall schedule with a great atmosphere. We love to send our new guys because each player will be playing at least four singles and three doubles matches in three days. Early in the fall season, the goal is to get in as many matches as possible in order to gain experience. The weather in Thomasville is going to be hot, there are going to be a lot of good players there, so it will be a good test to see how hard they players have been working and if that is already paying off for them.
"At the same time, since it's the first tournament of the fall, there's less pressure for them. With the decreased pressure, they can just go out there and play, and try different strategies that we've been working on in practice. We'll be able to see how our three freshmen react to different situations on the court both emotionally and physically."
