Opening Kick
• With Memphis coming to Ladd-Peebles Stadium to take on the Jaguars Saturday, this marks the only time this fall South will play back-to-back home games.
• It will be the first opportunity for USA head coach Steve Campbell to take on an opponent the Jags faced in 2018 — his first year in charge of the program — in a rematch, and the only time it will happen during non-conference action.
• Memphis is the lone member of the American Athletic Conference that the Jags have faced in the program's first 10-plus seasons of existence; while Tulane competed in Conference USA when South beat the Green Wave in New Orleans in 2013, the two schools are scheduled to meet again three times in a four-year span from 2023-26.
• Jag WR Tre'Veon Hamilton is a graduate transfer from Memphis after spending the last two seasons as a part of the Tiger program.
• South assistant coach Mike Bangtson served as a graduate assistant at Memphis in 2015, helping the Tigers to a 9-4 finish and a berth in the Birmingham Bowl his lone season with the program.
Notes From The Last Memphis Meeting
• Jag QB Evan Orth completed 24-of-32 pass attempts for 360 yards, tying the school game record for passing yards while posting the second-best total offense figure — he finished with 369 yards — on South's game record list.
• The primary recipient of Orth's effort was Jamarius Way, who caught 10 balls for a career-best 185 yards — the second-highest figure in the program's record book — and a score.
• It was the third time in USA's first four games of the season that Kawaan Baker scored multiple touchdowns.
• The Jaguar offense entered play 8-for-43 (18.6%) on third-down conversions but were 8-for-15 on third downs against the Tigers.
• Darrell Henderson's 188 rushing yards were the most South's defense surrendered to an individual last season.
Notes On Campbell's Coaching/Playing Career
• Campbell's 163-63 mark as a head coach includes going 33-15 over four years at Central Arkansas from 2014-17, where he guided the Bears to back-to-back NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances before taking over at South Alabama.
• He has led two programs to national championships — Delta (Miss.) State in 2000 at the NCAA Division II level and Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. to the 2007 National Junior College Athletic Association crown.
• In 20 seasons no team coached by Campbell finished below .500 prior to the 2018 campaign.
• Campbell has coached on the staffs of Pat Dye (Auburn graduate assistant, 1988-89) and Jackie Sherrill (Mississippi State assistant, 2003).
• Campbell and Jaguar coordinators Kenny Edenfield and Greg Stewart were teammates on Troy's 1987 NCAA Division II national championship squad.
Ground And Pound
In their win over Jackson State last time out, the Jaguars posted a school-record 413 rushing yards, breaking the previous mark of 391 set in a 64-0 win over Edward Waters (Fla.) on Sept. 25, 2010.  Nine individuals contributed to the total — the fifth highest recorded in the NCAA through the opening weeks of the season — in which South averaged 6.88 yards per carry, the third-highest figure in program history against an NCAA Division I opponent.
Stout In The Second Half
Through two outings, the Jag defense ranks among the top three in the Sun Belt Conference in four different statistical categories — rush, pass, pass efficiency and total — including standing second, as well as 26th nationally, on the latter list surrendering 270.5 per contest.  Those numbers have been keyed by the unit's performance in the second half, when USA has given up just a total of 106 yards after JSU managed only 40 last weekend.
Mint Condition
Senior Tra Minter led the school-record rushing effort with 189 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries in the Jaguars' win over the Tigers, finishing the game with 275 all-purpose yards. Â In addition to tying a previous career high with a pair of scores, the senior established a school game record with an average of 11.81 yards per carry (minimum 10 attempts) while his all-purpose yardage total was the second-highest in the program's record book. Â His 49-yard touchdown run that gave the Jags the lead for good late in the opening quarter was the longest of his career, and he also became the first running back in school history to pace the team in catches in consecutive outings after hauling in four for 33 yards.
Thompson Now On Top Of All-Time List
CB Jalen Thompson's second-quarter interception last time out was the ninth of his career, breaking a tie with Jeremy Reaves — currently a member of the Washington Redskins' practice squad — to give him sole possession of the all-time mark in South's record book.  The senior later broke up a pass as well as he became just the third individual in program history to record 20 or more passes defensed in a career.
Beaton In The Backfield
All three of Jordon Beaton's tackles in the Jaguars' win over JSU were recorded behind the line of scrimmage, including one in the end zone for the program's first safety since October 2017 that extended South's lead to 20 points in the final minute of the third quarter.  The senior's second stop for loss came with the Tigers facing third-and-two in the opening minute of the second quarter to end a drive with South ahead by just six points at the time, as he recorded career a career-best 2½ in the game — it was the first time Beaton has been credited with multiple tackles for loss since USA's win over Texas State last season.
Solid Start For Senior Up Front
Coming into the year, senior DL Jeffery Whatley had recorded a total of 2½ tackles for loss in 27 appearances over the last three seasons, a figure he has already surpassed in just two outings this fall after he was credited with a pair in the JSU victory.  In addition to leading the team in the category, it marked the first time in his career that Whatley has made stops in the backfield in consecutive contests.
