UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/3

Date: 8/3
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Jalen Tolbert, So., WR, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Tolbert: "Today we were out in the heat, when you play the receiver position and have to do all that [route] running, you can get a little tired.  We had some opportunities to make some plays earlier in practice and didn't.  Jalen made a big play right at the end of the session, though, that was a jump ball.  It was just a really phenomenal play."

Defensive Players of the Day: A.J. DeShazor, So., LB, Lakeland, Fla. and Patrick Rosette, Jr., LB, Richmond, Texas
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on DeShazor and Rosette: "We have some good competition going between A.J. and Patrick at the field outside linebacker position, they are both making a lot of plays.  During 'havoc,' when we are trying to disrupt offensive plays, the two have been doing a good job of contributing to that goal daily."

Play of the Day: Tolbert hauled in a 32-yard touchdown pass from Cephus Johnson as the final team period of the day was coming to a close, making the catch even though the defending cornerback got a hand on the ball.

Team period highlights: There were two team periods during the afternoon, with the first including 16 snaps and the second 24 total plays.

Miscellaneous Notes
-The final 35 minutes of practice were conducted in the Jaguar Training Center after South was forced to move under cover due to the weather.
-Tolbert also opened the first team period with a 77-yard touchdown reception, finishing the afternoon with five catches including 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills.
-Johnson completed 10-of-14 attempts in all drills the second half of practice, which included connecting on four straight passes — each to a different individual — his final series during the Jaguars' 7-on-7 period.
-Wy'Kevious Thomas ended the first team period with a sack for the Jag defense, while both Gi'Narious Johnson and DeShazor were credited with sacks during the last team period of the practice.
-Tylan Morton found Jamel Thomas on back-to-back snaps near the end of 7-on-7 drills, with the first going for a 24-yard score after the wideout cut in front of the defensive back to make the grab.
-Nick Mobley had the only pass break up on the day on the opening play of the latter team period.
-South's defense was also credited with a pair of coverage sacks during skeleton passing drills.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the second practice of the preseason: "We started off outside but had to move inside, I thought the kids handled the adversity well and we got better as the day went on; that was good to see.  It was only day two, but it was our first time out in the sun so we were able to get a good bit done outside and I liked the way the guys handled it.  We were still in shorts, but I thought the attention was good and we competed well against each other."
-On what he has noticed in the team's first two practices of camp: "I like the way the guys are flying around.  We still have some things to work on with execution since we have young guys on both sides of the ball who we will be counting on, I like the way they are working at it.  I believe our tempo is getting better, I didn't like it the early part of practice today but once we competed against each other I was pleased with the way it picked up."

Up next: South will practice at the Jaguar Training Center on Sunday, with the workout slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
