UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/2

Date: 8/2
Time: 3:30 p.m.-5:15 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Player of the Day: The Jaguar offense
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on the offense: "It's kind of hard to tell in shorts, but I was really excited for the whole offense.  I think we played with a lot more tempo today, we understood where we were going.  We made a few mistakes, but we played fast and it looked like the guys had fun.  I don't know that there was one person in particular, but as a group we did a good job."

Defensive Player of the Day: AJ Phillips, Fr., LB, Mobile, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Phillips: "We had a few young guys who played well but I want to point out one in particular who has a chance to help us, and that's AJ Phillips from right down the road.  I think he is doing a good job, he is a smart player.  I think he has to play more to get into Division I college football shape, but he has the ability to be a really good player."

Play of the Day: During the second play of the next to last series during the final team segment, Sterrling Fisher made a great read on a pass intended for Kawaan Baker across the middle and nearly picked the ball off.

Team period highlights: There were three total team segments with the first being a 10-minute 7-on-7 drill, followed by two offense versus defense segments which went a combined 40 snaps

Miscellaneous Notes
-Friday's practice was the first fall camp practice for the Jaguars under second-year South Alabama head coach Steve Campbell
-The nearly two-hour practice had originally been scheduled to be held at the James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility, but was relocated to the Jaguar Training Facility due to weather in the area.
- The 7-on-7 skeleton passing drill went 10 minutes.
- The first offense versus defense segment worked on the run-pass-option with the 16 snaps during the session showing a good balance as nine were run plays and seven were pass plays.
-South closed out the day with a 15-minute, 24-play team segment.
-Jaguar quarterbacks combined to hit six of their last seven attempts to close out the day.
- Outside linebacker A.J. DeShazor was credited with four tackles during the two combined team periods, while Fisher had a solo tackle and a pair of near interceptions.
-Junior safety Trè Young was also credited with a pass breakup during the first full team period, while Jay Woods fellow junior cornerback Jay Woods broke up a pass on the second play of the first series during the final team period.
-Brock Higdon was credited with a sack on the next to last play of the opening day of practice.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the first practice of the season: "It was a good first day. There was a lot of retention and carry-over from the spring. The guys did a good job in their summer meetings. I liked the enthusiasm and the way everyone ran around on the field. I wish we could've gotten out in the heat, but we had lighting (in the area). The guys adjusted well to that and had a good productive day one."
-On the pace of the opening practice: "We're a year further in and I feel everyone knows things better assignment wise and how we want to practice; we want to practice better than we did a year ago. Our pace is a little bit better than what it was this past year and we need to continue to keep picking up the pace. I liked the way Cephus (Johnson), Desmond (Trotter) ran the offense. Tylan (Morton) came in and also did some real good things too. We'll throw more and more at them, but as far as our install on day one, we were moving at a pretty good pace."
-On goals of these first few days of practice: "Right now, there's a lot of installation. We do a lot of things separate right now because you want to avoid having an injury before you even put pads on. There's a lot of teaching right now and making sure that everyone understands their assignments. You do a lot of fundamental work while you're in helmets. Once we put the pads on, it'll get a little more competitive out there with the offense and defense going against each other."

Junior S Sterrling Fisher
-On the first day of preseason camp: "It was good to get out there, everybody looked great.  We still have to focus on the little things including communicating, but it looked good.  It felt great to be out there."
-On the program's second season with the current coaching staff: "We have made some adjustments — which is great — and are ready to get after it."
-On the Jaguar defense: "First things first, we need to continue to stay consistent, without consistency we are not going to have a great defense and that's what the standard is.  We also need to do the little things right, we need everybody to stay focused and buy in."

Senior OL Roy Albritton
-On the team's first day of fall practice: "We made a lot of improvements from the spring to the first day of practice, it is a complete night-and-day difference with how much we've grown.  Everybody is more experienced with what they need to do, how to do it and what is going to happen if we do things correctly.  That just makes everything easier to do, when you know what's going on and how to react to it that just makes the game of football so much more fun."
-On the goals of the Jaguar offense this season: "We're looking to be a great power running team.  It makes me think about just mashing down the guy in front of me so we can gain five or six yards on every play."
-On USA's offensive line: "The offensive line has developed a lot more chemistry compared to last year.  Everybody on the line has gotten a lot larger in the offseason, that's a testament to how much work we've put in over the summer."

Up next: South Alabama will be back on the practice field Saturday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the James A. and Frances H. Football Practice Facility.
