UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 8/16

Date: 8/16
Time: 3:30-5:05 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Shells (helmets and shoulder pads)

Offensive Players of the Day: Davyn Flenord, So., WR, Lineville, Ala. and Tra Minter, Sr., RB, Ellaville, Ga.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Flenord and Minter: "There are two guys that I noticed again today.  Davyn Flenord is just always full speed, he's out there on special teams and he's making some plays offensively.  I also noticed Tra Minter.  You can really see a difference when he's in there, he looks sharp so I'm excited to watch him play."

Defensive Player of the Day: Riley Cole, Jr, LB, Oneonta, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Cole: "Riley Cole is a guy who has been through some adversity injury-wise but has come back and done well.  Today, the offense ran a reverse back to his side — which is a hard play defend — but he was in a good spot.  When you watch film, you can tell he's a guy who's playing hard out there.  You can tell he loves football and that he's on a mission. He's having a good camp and we're expecting big things from him."

Play of the Day: A pair of receivers made leaping catches over defensive backs for long completions during the team's 7-on-7 skeleton passing drills period.  On the offense's second snap of the period Jalen Tolbert was able to pull in a reception from Cephus Johnson, and three plays later Devin Voisin did the same on a Tylan Morton throw.

Team period highlights: There were a pair of 10-minute team segments over the final 40 minutes of practice, with the first concentrating on the offense mixing run and play-action pass calls and the second a regular competition period.

Miscellaneous Notes
-The lone special teams period of the afternoon focused on returning kickoffs.
-Eight different individuals caught passes during 7-on-7 drills, with Tolbert and Jared Wilson accounting for two receptions apiece.
-The Jaguar defense had a pair of coverage sacks in the period, and both Devin Rockette and Taj Bickham were able to break up passes.
-Charles Coleman III recorded a sack during the first team period of the afternoon while Joshua Carter was credited with one in the last period of the practice.
-Jalen Thompson accounted for the defense's only takeaway of the day with an interception on the third snap of the final team period.
-Kawaan Baker had a catch in both team periods for South's offense.
-Jeffery Whatley was able to make a tackle behind the line of scrimmage on the second play of the final team period as well.
-All practices are closed to the general public.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the team as it nears the end of preseason camp: "You know, we haven't had many bad days.  We weren't always prolific moving the ball in scrimmages, but I love the way that our guys have practiced, they got better each time out.  Normally at this point in camp a lot of folks start getting tired, but this group still has a lot of energy and enthusiasm.  I like their work ethic and the way they come out every day.  We made some plays today, you can see some things that we've been working on the last couple of days were executed well.  This team is growing and getting better."
-On Cephus Johnson: "Cephus had a really good day yesterday and today.  I thought there were some things he executed well in the scrimmage.  I believe our defense is playing better, and my experience has been when you move the ball well on your defense during camp it's going to be a long year on both sides [of the ball].  I've been pleased with Cephus, he's getting better; he does what we ask him to do, I have a lot of confidence in him."

Up next: The Jaguars will conduct a shortened practice in the morning at the Jaguar Training Center beginning at 9:45 a.m., returning to the facility at 3 pm for the program's annual Fan Day activities.
