SOCCER’S GODFREY CHOSEN AS SUN BELT WOMAN OF THE YEAR NOMINEE

INDIANAPOLISHannah Godfrey, a decorated former member of the University of South Alabama soccer program, has been named one of two nominees from the Sun Belt Conference for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Godfrey and Appalachian State women's tennis student-athlete Jeannez Daniel await possible selection as a top 10 finalist in Division I by the committee. The list will get narrowed down to a top three from each division and the winner will be announced Oct. 30 in Indianapolis.

A native of Thornton-Cleveleys, England, Godfrey earned all-Sun Belt recognition three times, was the conference's 2017 defensive player of the year and was a member of three NCAA Tournament teams.

Godfrey was a second-team pick as a sophomore after playing a team-high 2,022 minutes and leading a defense that ranked first in the league and set a new school record in goals against average (0.84) and shutouts (12). The following season, she once again paced the team in minutes played (1,935) as the Jaguars led the Sun Belt in shutouts while ranking second in goals against average, and moved up to first-team all-conference honors, in addition to her defensive player of the year award.

As a senior, Godfrey tied for third on the team in both goals (3) and points (8) to set new career highs in both categories. The Jags were third in the Sun Belt in goals against average overall, but posted a 0.57 GAA – thanks to five shutouts – in league play to rank second behind regular-season champion Texas State.

A three-time member of the Sun Belt Commissioner's List, Godfrey worked extensively in the Mobile community, volunteering at the Special Olympics, Penelope House and Ronald McDonald House, and USA Children's and Women's Hospital, among others, and also served as a coach at local soccer clinics.
