JAGUAR TRACK & FIELD’S BERGE EARNS ALL-AMERICA HONORS IN NCAA DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPS HEPTATHLON

AUSTIN, Texas – University of South Alabama junior Emilie Berge scored 5,493 points to place 15th in the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships heptathlon and pick up second-team all-America accolades for the second time this season.

Berge's highest finish of the day was a fifth-place, 40.10m (131-06.50) javelin throw that garnered 669 points and was just short of her season-best. She had a 5.82m (19-01.25) long jump to add 795 points to her total.

Ranked 18th entering the final event, Berge ran the fastest 800m of her career—2:18.13—to take ninth place, claim 849 points and advance to 15th in the overall standings.

The Iveland, Vest-Agder, Norway native set the Sun Belt Conference indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon records—4,203 points and 5,718 points, respectively—during the 2019 season. She earned second-team all-America honors with a 10th-place finish in this year's NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships pentathlon.

QUOTES FROM COACH BRUESKE
On Berge's perseverance today: "We are so proud of Emilie. Yesterday, she didn't have the best day, but she didn't let it get her down. She came back and had an outstanding second day in very adverse, brutally hot conditions. This has to be one of the hottest meets I've ever been to. She didn't let that be an excuse; she came out, competed and did really well in the javelin, long jump and 800m to move herself up to be named a second-team All-American."

On her development throughout the season: "We gear everything toward doing well at the Sun Belt Conference meet, so I know she's tired. It's a long year. To keep improving and moving up like she's been doing is a testament to her work ethic and commitment. We expect her to continue in that direction. We're very proud of her. She's had to battle through some minor injuries and she's had a lot of adversity, but she goes out there and always does her best."
