USA TRACK & FIELD’S COLLINS NAMED TO CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAM

GREENWOOD, Ind. – University of South Alabama senior Sean Collins was recognized as a member of the 2018-19 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Team, as announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Collins claimed third-team honors and was one of only 45 NCAA Division I student-athletes to receive the award. The full list of recipients is available here.

Collins and fellow senior Jobi Finau were named to the Academic All-District Team in May as representatives of District 4 (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Puerto Rico). Sophomores and upperclassmen with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA were eligible.

Collins received a biology degree in May, finishing the program with a 3.65 GPA. He was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Commissioner's list selection after maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The 2016 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and USA Freshman Scholar-Athlete of the Year also received USA's Perseverance Award twice during his career.

The Mobile, Ala., native won six Sun Belt pole vault championships in seven attempts, including a four-year sweep of the outdoor titles. He received all-America recognition three times and finished second in the nation during the 2016 indoor season. As a freshman, he set the league's indoor and outdoor pole vault records; the outdoor record stood until 2019, when he cleared 5.53m (18-01.75) at the Sun Belt Championships. A four-time NCAA East Region Preliminary Round qualifier, Collins placed sixth at this year's event to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championship but was unable to compete at nationals due to an injury.
