UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 4/9

Date: 4/9
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Full pads

Offensive Players of the Day: Tanner McGee, Fr., QB, Randleman, N.C. and Jared Wilson, Fr., RB, Troy, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on McGee and Wilson: "We did some good things early and late today, in the middle we got a little tired.  One thing that was encouraging was that we had two young guys step up.  Tanner really did a nice job in our tempo drill after being out and not getting as many reps, he stepped up and did a really good job and is going to be a really good player for us.  Jared has been steady the last few days, he's running the ball well and trying to pay attention to detail."

Defensive Player of the Day: A.J. DeShazor, R-Fr., LB, Lakeland, Fla.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on DeShazor: "A.J. has taken every rep he is supposed to get at every practice, I keep noticing him more and more each day.  He comes out and gives everything he's got every day, and because of that he's getting better and going to help us this fall."

Play of the Day: The two best plays of the afternoon both involved a pair of individuals teaming up; to start the next-to-last team period of the day Cephus Johnson made a throw that Jalen Tolbert caught despite tight coverage from the cornerback, while five snaps later Tyree Turner and Jeffery Whatley converged in the backfield to combine for a tackle for loss.

Team period highlights: The first of three 10-minute team periods concentrated on pass plays, while the next featured RPO and play-action pass calls by the offense; the session ended with the offense running first- and second-down plays before two series with tempo.

Miscellaneous Notes
-The workout marked the start of the final week of spring practice for the Jaguars.
-Twenty of the first 30 minutes of the session included individual drill work for both the offense and defense.
-There were also two special teams periods, one highlighted by punt coverage drills and the other working on kickoff returns.
-The Jag defense recorded two coverage sacks while Nick Mobley broke up the final pass during the lone 7-on-7 skeleton drills period of the day.
-During the opening team period, the unit got a stop on all four third-down plays while posting three sacks with two of those coming on back-to-back snaps by Jalon Sheffield.
-Mobley and Rocel McWilliams were credited with stops behind the line on consecutive plays in the next team period as well.
-South's defense also made four tackles for loss in the following team period, with Jordon Beaton adding a quarterback hurry.
-At the end of the last team period, Johnson found Davyn Flenord for two completions while McGee connected with Malik Stanley and Cade Sutherland.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On what he saw on film in Saturday's scrimmage: "Things are never as good or as bad as you think when you're out there, when I watched the scrimmage there were a lot of good things to build off of.  We still had a few mistakes here and there, but there were a lot of good things on both sides.  Defensively we did a lot of good things in short yardage and stiffened and did a great job on a couple of fourth-down conversions, offensively we converted a lot more third downs than I realized.  When you go back and watch film Tra Minter really did have a good day, he ran the football really well.  Kawaan Baker made some plays and Davyn Flenord caught some balls, we had two quarterbacks close to 75 percent; they were a lot more efficient with the football than I thought."
-On the rest of the team's final week of the spring: "Today was our last good, physical day.  We need to have a good day on Thursday, Friday we will do a lot of kicking and then play the game on Saturday.  We installed kickoff return today, we will work on specials teams Thursday and Friday and also work on two-minute drills those days.  We want to concentrate on a lot of situational stuff that you don't necessarily have to be full contact to work."

Up next: USA is next in action with a practice on Thursday that is slated to start at 3:30 p.m. (CDT) on campus.
