NEW ORLEANS – University of South Alabama junior outfielder Brittani was named the Community Coffee Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week for the second time this spring Tuesday afternoon after helping the Jaguars go 3-1 this past week.
The player of the week selection marks the second of Reid's career and the 19th offensive player honor and the 42nd total conference weekly award selection in program history. It is also the third time this spring that a Jaguar player has received the honor as the Kansas City, Mo. was also named the league's offensive player of the week back on Feb. 26 and freshman outfielder Victoria Ortiz received the honor last week.
Reid is just the second player in program history to win the offensive player of the week honor twice during the same season (Julie Moss – 2013) and the fourth to win it multiple times during her career, joining Moss, Brittany Fowler and Haleigh Lowe who each received the accolade in different seasons.
Sitting at the top of the Jaguar lineup, leadoff hitter, Reid played an important role in helping the Jaguars close out the home portion of their schedule with a 3-1 record with a midweek win over McNeese State and a Sun Belt series win over Georgia Southern. For the week, B. Reid was 7-for-14 at the plate (.500) with a .929 slugging percentage. Four of her seven hits went for extra bases – three doubles and a home run – while she also scored four times, drove in seven and recorded a team-high 13 total bases, while also walking twice.
Reid began her week with a 2-for-3 – with a double – performance at the plate in Wednesday night's 8-4 victory over McNeese State. In addition to the two hits against the Cowgirls, Reid also had a walk, two RBI and a run scored. With South trailing after the opening half inning, Reid led off the Jag first with a single and came around to score the first run of the contests for USA on Kennedy Cronan's RBI single. Her next time up, Reid put the club out in front with a two-run double.
In Friday's series-opening win over the Eagles, Reid was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and finished just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as she recorded a double, hit her seventh home run of the season, scored twice and drove in a career-high four runs. The double in game one of the series versus the Eagles set a new single-season mark at South Alabama. On Saturday, the junior outfielder extended her program mark as she posted her 17th double of the season – her sixth-straight game with a double – scored a run and drove in a run. She extended her current on-base streak to 10 games with a walk on Sunday.
Reid continues to stand among the conference leaders in several offensive categories this season as she lead the league in doubles, while also ranking among the Sun Belt leaders in slugging percentage (.649 – third), hits (58 – T-fourth), on-base percentage (.486 – sixth), batting average (.384 – sixth), walks (27 – T-seventh) and runs scored (39 – T-seventh). She also has 17 multi-hit outings this season.
In conference play, Reid holds a .379 batting average with 16 extra-base hits, and 20 of her 29 RBI have come against Sun Belt competition.
South Alabama (18-29, 7-18 SBC) will close out the regular season this weekend with a Sun Belt Conference, two-game road series at in-state rival Troy. First pitch for the series opener versus the Trojans is set for 6 p.m. on Friday at the Troy Softball Complex.
