Offensive Player of the Day: offensive line
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on the offensive line: "I think the offensive line is getting better and better each day, the first-team showed some good signs today. I thought our protection was really solid in our third-down period."
Defensive Player of the Day: Patrick Rosette, So., LB, Richmond, Texas
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Rosette: "You can tell at practice every day that Patrick is trying to get better every rep, I've noticed him. I think he is trying to do the things we are teaching him, based on these first three days he is a guy who is going to be able to come in and help us."
Play of the Day: With the Jag offense facing third-and-seven in the second team period of the morning, Tylan Morton threw a deep pass down the sideline that Logan Morgan was able to grab despite being face-guarded by the defensive back in coverage.
Team period highlights: The first of three 10-minute team periods in the last hour of practice saw South's offense running first-and-10 plays, with the second featuring third-down calls and the last the offense facing both first and second downs.
Miscellaneous Notes
-USA concluded a stretch of three straight days of practice with this workout, the program's first of the spring in full pads.
-The first half of practice included four five-minute periods concentrating on individual skill development.
-Prior to team period action, both Sterrling Fisher and A.J. DeShazor broke up passes during a 10-minute skeleton passing drill period.
-Jalen Thompson intercepted a pass, with Taji Stewart and Roy Yancey adding stops behind the line of scrimmage for the Jaguar defense in the first team period.
-Cade Sutherland hauled in three receptions during team period play, including one on the snap prior to Morgan's catch that would've moved the Jags into the red zone after facing third-and-four from their own 32-yard line.
-In the second team period, Thompson, Maurice Strong Jr. and Gus Nave broke up passes while Jeremiah Littles was credited with a sack.
-Khameron Taylor and Mo Edwards Jr. also posted multiple catches for the offense during team period action.
-Jamall Hickbottom deflected a pass and Tyree Turner recorded a stop for loss in the last team period of the day, with practice coming to a close after Tanner McGee found Malik Stanley for a 19-yard touchdown on the final snap of the session.
Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the team's first day in pads: "It was a good first day in pads, we were a little rusty in some areas but I was pleased with the way both sides flew around. There are always going to be some things on the first day in pads where you're not going to be where you are two weeks from now, but I was pleased with the guys' effort. There were some positives on both sides of the ball and a lot of good stuff to build off of."
-On if the team is ahead of where it was after three practices last year: "I definitely think we are in a lot of areas, we're further along as a program. We're working in a lot of new guys, we have some youth at certain spots but I love the way that the guys are working and the way a lot of them are making big strides. I think we're ahead with our attitude and our work ethic, and those are the things you can build on."
-On the importance of having Roy Yancey back: "He had earned a starting spot through spring training and fall camp, so it's big to have him back. It's big to have Riley [Cole] back from injury, that's two linebackers who didn't get to play much last year. We're further ahead now than we were in the fall with them back, but those guys have to stay healthy and make it through a year."
Up next: South is off until Tuesday's 3:30 p.m. (CDT) practice, its last prior to the first full scrimmage of the spring.
