UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH ALABAMA SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE REPORT – 3/8

Date: 3/8
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: James A. and Frances H. Yance Football Practice Facility
Practice attire: Helmets and shorts, no pads

Offensive Player of the Day: Cephus Johnson, R-Fr.., QB, Mobile, Ala.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Johnson: "Cephus came out today and did some really good things, he threw the ball extremely well; I thought he had a really good second day.  I think he is paying attention to detail better, you can see a big difference from a year ago.  You can tell he feels a lot more comfortable, and the more reps he gets the better he is going to be."

Defensive Player of the Day: Kade Koler, Fr., LB, Madison, Ala.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Koler: "Kade is a guy who we redshirted this year who we are counting on, he really had a good offseason and tested well.  These first couple of days we wanted to see how he reacted because we're throwing a lot at him, and I think he's had a really good two days.  I think the future is bright for Kade."

Play of the Day: In the middle of the final team period of the afternoon, Jalen Tolbert not only went up to catch a pass from Desmond Trotter but held on after contact from the defensive back in coverage.

Team period highlights: During the first 10-minute team period of the day the Jaguars ran only pass plays, while in the second 10-minute period — the last of the practice — the offense called both runs and passes.

Miscellaneous Notes
-South worked out in helmets and shorts for the second time in as many days.
-The Jags went through 20 minutes of individual work prior to the start of the lone placekicking period of the afternoon.
-During two other special teams periods, the Jaguars went through drills focusing on special teams coverage units.
-Four quarterbacks — Johnson, Tylan Morton, Trotter and Tanner McGee all took four snaps during both teams periods.
-Nine different receivers combined to catch 10 passes during the final two team periods with TE Hunter Henson the lone individual to haul in more than one reception.
-Jalen Thompson recorded the defense's only takeaway with an interception in the second team period, while Devin Rockette was credited with a pass defensed three plays later.

Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the second practice of the spring season: "I thought we moved around better today than we did yesterday, the guys understood the tempo a little better.  I saw some flashes out of some of the young quarterbacks, I thought Desmond and Tanner did some good things today.  I liked the way defensively we put some movement things in as they work on finishing putting their package in.  I thought we had a good day."
-On what he wants to see Saturday at the team's first workout in full pads: "I want to see some clean execution.  Offensively we need to keep the ball off the ground, communicate, and protect the quarterback so that we are able to throw and catch.  Defensively I want to see us be able to get in and out of our packages, from our base package to our third down stuff.  It's the first time we'll be doing that stuff in pads this year, but we need to execute it.  For some of our guys this is their second year doing this stuff, we need to be further along than we were last year."

Up next: The Jaguars' first spring practice in full pads is slated to get underway Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (CST) at the Jaguar Training Center.
