Head coach Steve Campbell
On the scrimmage: "It was a better day, we made a lot of improvement from the first little half scrimmage that we had. I think we put two balls on the ground — and those were bad pitches — but I thought the running backs did a good job protecting the football and ran hard. I thought we tackled well. We left a couple of plays out there, but the guys who did that have made those plays before. There was a lot of good stuff to build off of."
On taking care of the ball on Saturday: "That was the big deal, I thought our ball security was a lot better today. We did a pretty good job of protecting the football for our first big scrimmage."
On the performance of the offensive line: "I think we have a chance to be more physical up front. When we were coming off the goal line, we were able to hand the ball off to the tailback and you need to be able to do that; we did a good job of punching it out in that situation."
On Terrion Avery: "Through one-and-a-half scrimmages Terrion has definitely shown that he is going to be good, which I knew. I have a vested interest in [Mississippi] Gulf Coast with my son over there, I watched them every Thursday night on the Internet so I had a pretty good idea of what he could do. He has not disappointed, he's a good football player."
Sophomore LB Riley Cole
On the performance of the defense on Saturday: "I thought we had a very good day overall. We do need to work on tackling, but it was the first scrimmage of the spring so we have time to work on it."
On big plays sparking the unit early: "That's all it takes, once one person gets a sack or a fumble we start rolling."
On the defense at this point in the spring: "We have a lot of potential. We're not there yet, but we have the potential to be really good this year."
Redshirt Freshman QB Cephus Johnson
On how the offense did in the scrimmage: "Today was a big improvement from the first time we scrimmaged, everybody took care of their assignments and the execution was much better."
On doing a better job of taking care of the ball: "I had one ball on the ground, but that was on me; it's something I need to clean up. But other than that, we did really well."
On closing the last drive with a touchdown: "That will make for a much better weekend. I have to give props to the offensive line, they fought through adversity and played well all day."
Junior OL Troy Thingstad
On how the offense line performed Saturday morning: "I think this was probably the best scrimmage we have had in the five years that I have been here. People are learning and getting better every day, we were clicking on everything. I was really proud of the guys coming together, we are getting closer as a group."
On better depth on the offensive line this spring: "By this time last spring we only had seven guys rotating. It's impressive to see everyone hold up together, that comes from Coach Campbell and his tough mentality."
On competition from junior-college transfers at the position: "Even if guys don't want to say it, I think they have pushed everyone who wants to hold on to their job. They have stepped up and shown coach they are here to play."
Up next: South returns to action on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. with a two-hour practice on campus.
