Date: 3/14
Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m. (CDT)
Place: Jaguar Training Center
Practice attire: Full pads
Offensive Player of the Day: Malik Stanley, Sr., WR, Topeka, Kan.
-Offensive coordinator Kenny Edenfield on Stanley: "I don't know that we had a great day today — we turned the ball over a lot —but one of the bright spots was Malik. There was a 50/50 ball that he went up and got to make a big play, which kind of got us going a little bit offensively."
Defensive Player of the Day: Tyrone Legette, Fr., CB, River Ridge, La.
-Defensive coordinator Greg Stewart on Legette: "Tyrone came here as a slot receiver, and after we moved him to corner he didn't get a lot of playing time or reps. But he's a guy who has a lot of ability, today he came up and made a couple of plays. I'm fired up about Tyrone."
Play of the Day: One play after the offense moved across midfield on the opening drive of the mini scrimmage, Keith Gallmon jumped in front of an open receiver at the last minute to pick off a pass and end the possession; Legette was also a candidate after forcing and recovering a fumble later on in the day.
Team period highlights: Instead of a team period, the team scrimmaged during the final 40 minutes of practice.
Miscellaneous Notes
-The opening half hour of the last workout prior to Spring Break included 20 minutes of individual skills drills.
-Prior to the start of the mini scrimmage, there was 10-minute skeleton passing drills period followed by a five-minute segment of practice working on field goals and extra points, and 10 minutes of installation on both sides of the ball.
-Cephus Johnson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Tolbert during 7-on-7 drills, while Taj Bickham broke up a pass for the defense in the same period.
-The Jaguar defense forced five turnovers — three fumbles and two interceptions — while posting seven stops behind the line in the mini scrimmage.
-A.J. DeShazor and Jeremiah Littles paced the group with four stops apiece, while Roy Yancey, Jeffery Whatley and Jalon Sheffied were each credited with three tackles.
-Not only did Legette recover a fumble, he also accounted for the unit's other interception.
-Johnson had the longest completion of the afternoon after finding Tolbert for a 56-yard gain, while Tylan Morton completed both passes for 52 yards including a 46-yard touchdown to Stanley for the offense's first points.
-Terrion Avery led South with 36 yards rushing, recording the other score for the offense on a two-yard run on the final snap of the mini scrimmage, while Jared Wilson added 27 yards on five attempts.
-Tolbert was the group's leading receiver with three catches for 72 yards, with Avery the only other individual to finish with multiple receptions.
Head coach Steve Campbell
-On the defense in the mini scrimmage: "I thought defensively we flew around, I saw a lot of guys hitting — today was the first tackling day, you only get eight in the spring — and we tackled and ran to the ball well. Some guys really stepped up over there, Tyrone Legette made a big play or two, and Jamall Hickbottom, Kade Koler and Roy Yancey did some good things."
-On the offense's performance on Thursday: "We had a chance to run the ball a time or two real early, but then the turnover bug hit us. It was the first time our backs had been hit, and we didn't do a good job with our ball security. We work on it every day, but the young guys put the ball on the ground too many times I think we left a couple of plays out there, we have to find a way to finish those big plays. We'll get to the point where we will finish those plays, but right now — five days in — we're not there yet."
-On his assessment of the offense heading into Spring Break: "Our first real scrimmage is the Saturday after we get back [from Spring Break], this was 51 percent practice and 49 percent scrimmage. We're still a week's practice away from our first scrimmage, normally in the first scrimmage these things — the turnovers and the missed assignments — show up. Today was good for those young guys, we work ball security every day and now they understand why "
Junior LB Roy Yancey
-On the defense's performance in the mini scrimmage: "It was a good day, everybody was flying around; there were a lot of people making plays, and that's what we want. We executed well today, there are still some areas we have touching up to do but I feel like we're coming together as a defense."
-On where the defense is after five practices: "They threw a lot of stuff at us at first, it was a new defense with new plays. We've taken to it pretty good."
-On returning from an injury suffered in the fall: "It feels good to just be back out around the team. Sitting out really hurt me, I had just got here so I was looking forward to playing last year."
