All-Time Series
Clemson holds a 6-5 all-time lead over South Alabama in a series that began in 1973. USA competed in the 2001 NCAA Regional at Clemson, but did not face CU. The Jags also dropped two of three games at Clemson in 1987 after winning the series opener 7-6. USA defeated Clemson 2-1 in a 16-inning game at the 1998 NCAA Regional at Clemson, and was eventually eliminated from the tournament by eventual national champion Southern Cal. The Tigers took two of three games from the Jaguars in a three-game set at Clemson in 2002, which marked the last meeting between the schools.
Last Meeting
Clemson won the series opener 13-1 in 2002 at Clemson, but South Alabama rebounded with a 6-4 win in game two of the series to force a rubber match in the series finale, which the Tigers won 11-3.
Jag Notes
• First baseman Wells Davis enters the season with a 19-game on-base streak after closing the 2018 season by reaching safely in 19 straight contests.
• South Alabama posted a .978 fielding percentage last season, which marked the fourth consecutive year it has fielded .978 or higher as a team. The Jaguars ranked 20th nationally in fielding percentage in 2018, and led the Sun Belt Conference with a .983 fielding percentage in league contests.
• USA ranked 11th nationally in walks (331) in 2018.
• South Alabama is 5-2 in season openers under head coach Mark Calvi, and has won four consecutive season-opening games dating back to the 2015 season. The Jaguars have also won their first three games of the year in each of those seasons, including three straight over Kansas State, No. 18 Oklahoma and Virginia Tech to open the 2018 season in Myrtle Beach, S.C., last year.
• USA has won 30-plus games the last four seasons under Calvi, including back-to-back 40-win seasons in 2016-17. South Alabama missed out on the NCAA postseason in 2018, which marked its first absence in the tournament since 2015.
• Jaguar head coach Mark Calvi and Tiger head coach Monte Lee served as assistant coaches on the South Carolina staff from 2005-08.
• The Jaguars must replace four position players and one pitcher from 2018 who were lost due to the Major League Baseball Draft: Tyler Carr (RHP), Brendan Donovan (3B), Dylan Hardy (LF), Drew LaBounty (SS) and Travis Swaggerty (CF). Swaggerty was a first-round selection (10th overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates, making him just the fifth Jaguar (Glenn Borgmann, [9th pick] 1971; Alex Pastore [13th pick] 1973; [18th pick] 1974; Pat Putnam [23rd pick] 1975; Mike Zimmerman [27th pick] 1990) in program history to earn the distinction as a first-round pick.
