MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head women's basketball coach Terry Fowler announced on Thursday that the program has signed two individuals to National Letters-of-Intent.
Both Serin Dunne and Janelle Jones will join the program for the 2020-21 season and have four years of eligibility.
Last season, Dunne — a 5-foot-7 guard from Colorado Springs, Colo. — averaged 20.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game at Mesa Ridge High School. She connected on 59 three-point field goals while making 42 percent of her attempts from beyond the three-point arc on the year, scoring 20 or more points on 17 occasions including a pair of performances with 30-plus points. After helping the Grizzlies go 19-6 overall following a win in their second-round state 4A tournament game, Dunne not only was selected the league's Player of the Year but all-state and all-conference as well.
She posted 9.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest as a sophomore for a Mesa Ridge team that went 23-4 after advancing to the semifinals of the state tournament, receiving all-league honors. As a freshman she contributed 6.3 points, 2.2 boards and 2.3 assists per outing as the Grizzlies finished 21-5 after reaching the quarterfinals of the state playoffs.
Dunne was selected to play in The Show 2018 Top 40 All-Star Game in Colorado as well as The Show Top 20 contest last season. A three-time academic all-state choice, she was also recruited by San Diego State, Tulsa, UTEP and Texas State.
"We are about to lose Shaforia [Kines] and were looking for a scoring point guard," Fowler said. "Serin is an aggressive point guard who also knows what the team needs and can distribute the ball."
Jones, a 5-foot-9 guard from Washington High School in Pensacola, Fla., enters her senior season with career averages of 17 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game. In addition to being named to the all-area team each of her first three years, she has been chosen the team's most valuable player all three seasons as well.
As a junior, she posted a career-high 18.8 points per game, adding seven rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.6 steals per contest to help the Wildcats to a 21-7 finish after advancing to the quarterfinals of the state 7A tournament, earning third-team all-state honors for her efforts. Twice last season Jones was named the Player of the Week by the Pensacola News-Journal.
She averaged 15.2 points, five boards and 2.3 steals per outing her sophomore year as WHS earned a berth in the state playoffs on the way to a 19-7 finish, while during her freshman campaign Jones recorded 16.5 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in helping the Wildcats to a 14-10 mark and a berth in the state tournament.
Both Troy and Southern Mississippi recruited Jones as well.
"Janelle is a young lady we've been watching since the ninth grade, she participated in both our team and individual camps," said Fowler. "She is a versatile player who has a great feel for the game; not only can she both pass and shoot the ball, she can play with her back to the basket and post up people. Janelle will give us a lot of flexibility on the perimeter."
