NEW ORLEANS – After averaging a double-double in the University of South Alabama women's basketball team's two games last week, Antoinette Lewis was voted the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday.
It's the fifth time in her career that the junior center — a first-team all-league selection and the projected player of the year in the preseason — has earned the honor.
Lewis recorded a double-double in both of the Jaguars' Preseason WNIT games last week, averaging 25 points and 14 rebounds per contest while shooting 51.5 percent from the field and adding seven blocks, six steals and four assists. In a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, she finished with 24 points and 18 rebounds — setting a Mitchell Center record by a South player on the boards — led all players with three blocks, and had three assists and two steals, while it was her free throw with 17 seconds left that provided the final margin of victory. The next night, Lewis paced all players with 26 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and four steals in 26 minutes against Miami (Ohio).
Through four games, the Memphis, Tenn., native is averaging a team-best 17.8 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while also leading the Jags with 10 blocked shots and eight steals. She is atop the conference and stands second nationally with three double-doubles, leads the Sun Belt in rebounds and blocks per outing, and is second in the league in scoring.
Lewis and the Jaguars will next take on Alabama on Thursday at the Mitchell Center, with the game slated to get underway at 7 p.m. (CST).
