MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama men's basketball head coach
Richie Riley announced Saturday that the Jaguars have signed five players to National Letters of Intent for the 2020-21 season.
Joining the program are
Zondrick Garrett, from Oxford High School in Oxford, Ala.,
Caleb White, from Crescent City Christian School in Metairie, La.,
David Walker, from Casper College in Casper, Wyo.,
Jamal West, from St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md., and
Andrew Anderson, from Tipton-Rosemark Academy in Millington, Tenn.
The class, comprised of three forwards and two guards, is rated No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference by 247Sports.com.
Garrett, a three-star prospect and ranked No. 3 in the state of Alabama by 247Sports.com, averaged 19 points, 9.5 rebounds and five assists per game as a junior.
The Alabama Sports Writers Association named the 6-foot-7 forward to the 2019 6A All-State Second Team after leading Oxford to the round of 16 in the state tournament.
"Zondrick is an incredible kid and one of the best players in the state of Alabama," Riley said. "His versatility and athleticism will immediately translate to this level. He is exactly what we look for in a forward: an elite passer, good perimeter shooting and a high-level rebounder. He comes from an exceptional high school program at Oxford that's led by Joel Vanmeter."
White, a 6-foot-9 forward, was given a two-star rating by 247Sports and is the No. 6 recruit out of the state of Louisiana.
"Caleb has unlimited potential and continues to get better every single day," Riley said. "With his size and athleticism, it is exciting to envision where his game will elevate to in the years to come. He started playing basketball at a later age so his best days are ahead of him. Playing for Chris Chaney this year will be great for him. Chris has coached as many, if not more, Division I bigs than anyone in the country."
Walker spent the 2018-19 season at Southern Idaho, where he averaged 13.4 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. He scored 20 points or more six times, including a season-high against Central Wyoming. He also tallied 28 against Western Nebraska, shooting 12 for 16 from the floor and 4 for 5 from 3-point land.
The 6-foot-3 guard transferred to Casper College for the 2019-20 campaign and is averaging 28.0 points through three games.
As a prep senior in Toronto, he put up 25 points and 8 rebounds per contest and was MVP of his league.
"David's combination of skill, size and athleticism make him one of the premier junior college players in the entire country; he is a winner, period," Riley stated. "Not only is he a winner, but he is coming from a big-time culture at Casper where he plays for Coach Shaun Gutting. He will have an immediate impact on our program with his ability to score the basketball and defend at an elite level. This is a huge addition for South Alabama basketball."
West is the No. 9 player in the state of Maryland and rated two stars by 247Sports. Last season he averaged 12.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game and led St. Frances to a Baltimore Catholic League title after scoring 28 points in the championship game.
Earlier in the year, the 6-foot-5 forward scored 42 points against Annapolis Area Christian. As a sophomore, he helped Dunbar High School to a 1A state crown.
"Jamal exemplifies toughness, character, and competitiveness," Riley commented. "As a program, we recruit the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia) area really hard and Jamal was our top priority. I've coached a lot of great players from up that way over the years and Jamal has a chance to be one of the best. He is a three-level scorer with a non-stop motor coming from a national power in St. Frances. Coach (Nicholas) Myles' guys come to you prepared and I'm sure Jamal will be no different."
Anderson, 6-foot-0 guard, led Tipton-Rosemark to a DII-A region championship and a state runner-up finish.
"Andrew has a passion for the game that's unmatched and an extremely high basketball IQ to go with it, Riley said. "He has that Memphis toughness that makes him special. Andrew possesses the attributes that we look for in a point guard. Coming from a tremendous basketball family, he has been battle tested and will be ready to play at this level."
