MOODIE'S QUOTES ON THE WEEKEND
On preparing for the next two opponents: "I think we have to learn a lot from Sunday. We were outplayed and (Mississippi State's) athleticism was too much for us. I thought they did a great job. For us, we didn't play our best. If we had played our best and lost, then we could have at least said, where do we go from here? The focal point for us now is how do we play our best against the top teams? That's our first loss since Florida in the NCAA tournament. The reaction from the girls was great; everyone was watching video and training extra on their own. Maybe that's just what we need to wake up, know how difficult this weekend will be and treat them with respect.
On the takeaway from Sunday's loss: "Mississippi State came in here with a game plan and were able to execute it. They took us out of our game; we started playing it long and trying to run against them. They were faster, then we tried to fight against them and they were stronger. We have to learn where we're good and what our strengths and weaknesses are. The few moments where we put the ball down and played, you could see us be able to string passes together and build confidence. If we had that platform to build off of, we would have done better, but no doubt the better team won. We just can't have a performance like that again and expect to win. In terms of effort and our game plan, there needs to be more clarity and understanding of how we win those games."
On emphasizing set pieces: "If you can keep a Mississippi State nil-nil, you stand a chance to win it on a set piece. That's what can separate good and great teams. There is a lot of emphasis on that, even the first year I was here and in all of my years coaching. We find ourselves in scenarios, whether it's corners, throws or deep free kicks, where I feel like it's worth your while to work on that once or twice a week because you see them so often in games. If you're not prepared for those scenarios, then you're not doing your job properly. If you're tied or struggling to find your rhythm, a goal off a set piece can be just what you need to get into the game."
On LSU: "We saw an LSU team in the spring that wasn't fully equipped with their arsenal. They were missing some crucial players. We have to understand and respect that, and know how dangerous they were last year when we played them in the preseason. They're a very good team and a good understanding of what they want. They're coming off the back of two really good wins, one of which is a conference foe for us (Texas State). Their tails are up and we're coming off a loss and having to respond. You're only as good as your last game – our girls need to recognize that – but LSU will be mistaken if they don't give us the respect we deserve because we have the ability to move the ball and shift it between the pockets. They saw that when we saw them last. We have to get our confidence back and need to put on a performance that both mimics the style we play and an effort that suggests we want to win the game."
