TEMPE, Ariz. – University of South Alabama juniors Loic Cloes and Clement Marzol remained among the top 20 in the Oracle ITA national doubles rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Wednesday.
Not only did the pair come in at No. 16 in the first ratings following the conclusion of the fall season, but Marzol was 48th — a rise of nearly 75 spots from his preseason ranking — in singles as well.
Cloes and Marzol competed in three tournaments during the fall, going 9-4 overall while advancing to the finals in the main draw of the ITA Southern Regional Championship in addition to the championship of the consolation bracket at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. In their first event of the semester, the two reached the quarterfinals of the main draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American.
In singles action, Marzol went 5-4 overall with a 3-1 mark against nationally-ranked opponents. He won three matches in two days at the ITA All-American to earn a spot in the main draw, and after falling into the consolation bracket Marzol picked up a pair of victories to advance to the quarterfinals.
"The rankings are good, but we are still early in the year; they will change a lot as we play throughout the spring," said Jaguar head coach Nick Brochu. "Nonetheless, we are proud to see Clement climb up the singles rankings into the top 50, he had a great All-American tournament and gathered lots of ranked wins. We had success all semester long in doubles and that's why we remained top 20. All of their losses came against top-10 teams, including a two-point loss to the No. 1 pair in the nation.
"These rankings will motivate the entire team, the boys are excited about starting the spring."
