MOBILE, Ala. – Following an extended break, the University of South Alabama women's tennis team will welcome five schools to the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts for the Sun Belt Shootout, starting Friday afternoon.
The action commences Friday when the Jaguars take on Georgia State at 2 p.m. On Saturday, Appalachian State and Georgia State start things off at 8 a.m., then South Alabama faces Coastal Carolina at 11 a.m. Georgia Southern and Troy will close out the day at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, Georgia State and Coastal Carolina will play at 8 a.m. and Georgia Southern will face Appalachian State at 11 a.m.
"We'll have five Sun Belt teams here and everyone is jockeying for seeding positions within the conference, so we should have some pretty good tennis out here," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "Georgia State are defending champs and Coastal Carolina are the new team in the conference and they've built quite a good record this year. Between the three of us, we're all in the top five of the conference. We'll have some big matches this weekend."
The Jags come into the Shootout on a seven-match win streak and currently hold a 15-4 overall record. They closed out the month of March with victories over Georgia Southern (6-1) and Appalachian State (7-0), thanks to the efforts of sophomore
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.), who was named the league's player of the week after going 2-0 in both singles and doubles.
Stiteler is 10-5 this spring, all at No. 1 singles, while sophomores
Patricia Martins (Lisbon, Portugal) and
Alina Zolotareva (Barnaul, Russia) both have a team-high 12 wins.
Friday's opponent is 10-7 on the year but has won three in a row and five of its last six matches.
Kristen Rehse has an 8-3 record at the top singles flight, and
Arina Taluyenko has a team-best 13 victories, including nine at No. 2.
Coastal Carolina is 14-4 overall after splitting its last four outings. The Chanticleers started the year with a 12-2 mark thanks to a seven-match win streak.
Rylie Cox is 12-5 at No. 1 and has won seven of her last eight matches.
"From an individual standpoint, they want to win those matches, but from a team standpoint, it's one of seven points," Keyser said of the teams' No. 1 singles competitors. "If we can get that point, that all helps for the big picture."
