All-Time Series
South Alabama holds a 3-2 all-time lead over Coastal Carolina in a series that began in 2005. CCU took two of three games from the Jaguars in 2005, while USA swept a pair of games from the Chanticleers at Stanky Field in 2006. This weekend's series marks the first meeting between the schools since CCU joined the Sun Belt Conference.Â
Last Time Out
USA defeated New Orleans 9-6 Tuesday in New Orleans after rallying for five runs in the top of the ninth inning. After falling behind 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth following a two-run home run by the Privateers, USA pushed five runs across with one out in the top of the ninth, capped by a grand slam from Jared Barnes. The victory extended the Jaguars' winning streak to four games. The Jags swept Louisiana-Monroe in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series last weekend in Monroe, La. The Jaguar pitching staff surrendered just six runs in the three-game series, while the USA offense averaged over eight runs per contest.Â
On Coastal Carolina
The No. 26 Chanticleers fell to No. 20 Wake Forest 19-9 Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C., after a three-game split with then No. 20 Louisiana-Lafayette in Conway, S.C. The Cajuns won the series opener, the Chanticleers took game two and the teams played to a 7-7 tie in the series finale due to the league's curfew rule. CCU enters the weekend in second place in the SBC East Division behind the Jaguars. The Chanticleers lead the Sun Belt Conference in home runs (48), which ranks sixth nationally entering the weekend.
JAGS IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
South Alabama ranks third nationally in walks (195), seventh in runs per game (8.2), ninth in runs scored (269), 10th in on-base percentage (.414), 16th in home runs (39) and 19th in home runs per game (1.18).
SWAGGERTY IN NATIONAL RANKINGS
Center fielder Travis Swaggerty leads the SBC and ranks ninth nationally in on-base percentage (.514). He also leads the league and ranks 25th nationally in batting average (.398) entering the series.
JAGS AT STANKY FIELD
USA is 8-1 in nine games this season at Stanky Field, and is batting .350 with 21 doubles, four triples, seven home runs, 99 RBI, 105 runs scored, 17 stolen bases and a .515 on-base percentage. Eddie Paparella leads the team with a .500 batting average in eight home contests this year. The Jaguar pitching staff enters the series with a 3.60 team ERA at Stanky Field, with 86 strikeouts against 27 walks in 80 innings pitched.
TWO OR FEWER TO WIN
USA is 9-1 when allowing two or fewer runs, but is 11-12 when surrendering three or more.Â
TWO-OUT RBI
Of USA's 245 team RBI, 98 have come with two outs which accounts for 40 percent of the Jaguars' team RBI total. Travis Swaggerty leads the squad with 17 two-out RBI this season.
JAG OFFENSE LEADS THE SBCÂ
South Alabama leads the SBC in batting average (.301), slugging percentage (.469), on-base percentage (.414), runs scored (269) and RBI (245), and ranks second in the league in hits (338) and home runs (39).
LEADING AFTER SEVEN
USA is 17-0 when leading after seven innings this season, but is 0-10 when trailing and 2-3 when tied after seven frames.Â
JAGS WITH BASES LOADED
South Alabama is hitting .483 (28-for-58) with the bases loaded this season, led by Travis Swaggerty who has five hits and is hitting .714 with the bags full of Jags. USA has hit six grand slams this season, led by Eddie Paparella with two, following Jared Barnes' game-winning grand slam Tuesday at New Orleans.
RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION
The Jags are batting .324 (120-for-370) with runners in scoring position.Travis Swaggerty leads the team with 16 hits with RISP. The Jags hit .333 (13-for-39) with runners in scoring position in last weekend's series at ULM.Â
TEN OR MORE RUNS
USA is 9-0 when scoring 10 or more runs this season and 16-4 when scoring six or more, but is 4-9 when scoring five or less.Â
HOME RUN PRODUCTION
South Alabama has homered in eight straight games, and in 11 of its last 13 contests dating back to March 18 at Georgia Southern when the Jags homered three times. The Jags homered in every game last week, including four at Southeastern Louisiana and two in the ULM series opener, and also homered twice in Tuesday's win at New Orleans.
EARLY/LATE-INNING RUN PRODUCTION
South Alabama has outscored the opposition 28-8 in the first inning and 20-2 in the ninth inning this season. USA has allowed more runs (27 each) in the third and sixth innings than any other frames this year.
HUSTON AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS
Jaguar left-hander Thomas Huston enters Friday's start ranked tied for third in the Sun Belt Conference in wins (4), runs allowed (13) and earned runs allowed (11), fourth in ERA (2.05), ninth in innings pitched (48.1), tied for 10th in fewest walks allowed (12) and 13th in strikeouts (42). In his last two starts, which came at Louisiana-Lafayette and ULM, Huston allowed just one run with 15 strikeouts against three walks in 16 innings pitched.
JAG BATS LAST WEEK
South Alabama hit .340 with nine doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 35 RBI, 35 runs scored and seven stolen bases in four games last week, in which it went 3-1. The Jags homered in every game last week, including four at Southeastern Louisiana and two in the ULM series opener. USA has homered in seven consecutive games dating back to the Louisiana-Lafayette series opener. Travis Swaggerty led the squad with a .474 batting average, and also added a double, one home run, seven RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases along with a .476 on-base percentage in four contetsts.
HUSTON NAMED SBC PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Left-hander Thomas Huston was named the the Sun Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Huston (4-1) tossed his second complete game of the season in a 4-1 series-clinching win over Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at Warhawk Field. The southpaw allowed one run on seven hits and struck out a career-high nine batters against one walk in a career-high nine innings pitched to earn his fourth win of the season. It marks the first time Huston has earned SBC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors, and the second time this season a Jaguar hurler has earned the distinction after left-hander Zach Melton was named the league's pitcher of the week on Feb. 21.Â
