CORPUS-CHRISTI, Texas – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team took four straight singles matches to sweep Arizona for the H-E-B Invitational championship Saturday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
The win marks the 14th-straight victory for USA as they improve to 15-2, while Arizona fell to 8-5 on the year. This year is the first time the Jags won the H-E-B Invitational since 2007.
"It was a great team effort today," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "We were aggressive, loud, and focused."
Freshman
Loic Cloes (Remicourt, Belgium) opened singles with a 6-3, 6-3 win over
Alejandro Reguant on court No. 4. At No. 3, freshman
Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) defeated
Trent Botha 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, and senior
Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) put the Jags up 3-0 by dispatching
Will Kneale 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2.
"We had an excellent start on all six courts," Brochu said. "It is great to see the guys compete so hard even if it was our third match in 24 hours."
Senior
Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) clinched the victory for the Jaguars with a 6-4, 7-5 win against
Shoki Kasahara on court No. 5.
"It is nice to see a guy like Pierre being reinserted into the lineup and clinch the championship for us," said Brochu. "We still have many matches to finish the season. We will enjoy this win but go right back to work on Monday."
The Jaguars return to the court Wednesday at 2 p.m. to play USC-Upstate at home.
