MEN’S TENNIS CRUISES TO HOME VICTORIES AGAINST FLORIDA A&M AND NICHOLLS

MOBILE, ALA. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team (5-2) beat Florida A&M 4-0 and Nicholls 7-0 in a home doubleheader on Sunday at Mobile Tennis Courts.  The Jaguars didn't lose a doubles match and each singles match win was in straight sets.

"Today, we really played as a team," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "This morning, we played with a different lineup than this afternoon, and, the guys accept the position they're put in and try to win that position."

In the first match of the day against Florida A&M, South Alabama took the doubles point.  Juan Cruz Soria and Clement Marzol defeated Walner Espinoza and Carlos Waitman 6-1 on court No. 1.  Loic Cloes and Olivier Gingras beat Courage Okungbowa and Karlyn Small 6-2 on court No. 2 for the point.  Tuki Jacobs and Lucas Gonzalez were down 5-2 to F Nani and Jalen Evans as Cloes and Gingras completed their doubles match.

"What I really like about doubles is that we tried new pairs today," said Brochu. "The guys' chemistry was right there, and they communicated well. It's always good to have different options in doubles. You don't want to have two guys stick together for the whole season because sometimes they get too comfortable. Winning the doubles point is only one point, but it gives you the momentum going into singles. We won all the doubles matches this weekend, and it certainly gave us a boost."

Soria won the first singles match on court No. 1 6-2, 6-1 over Okungbowa, and Cloes won on court No. 6 against Waitman 6-3, 6-2.  Jacobs won 6-1, 1-0, ret. against Small on court No. 2, and Marzol was also up 6-2, 6-1 on Skoromnyy on court No. 4.  Gingras was up 6-1, 3-4 on Espinoza on court No. 3 and Gonzalez was up on Nani 6-3, 6-5 on court No. 5

"Florida A&M is a type of team that you've got to play aggressive against," said Brochu.  "You can't just let them dictate because they can create some big points and openings for them. We made sure to get on top of them right from the beginning, and once we took off in singles, everything was really good."

Against Nicholls Gonzalez and Jacbos started things out with a 6-3 win over Bernard Wezeman and Leo Santos on court No. 3.  Soria and Marzol beat Oleksander Podgursky and Max Sinn 6-4 on court No. 1.  Cloes and Gingas won 6-2 over Sam Meessen and Cornelius Schramm.

Gonzalez took the first singles match 6-1, 6-0 over Santos on court No. 6.  Then Marzol beat Podgursky 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 3.  Cloes clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Schramm on court No. 5.

Soria defeated Meessen 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 2, and Jacbos topped Wezeman 6-2, 6-3 on court No. 1.  Gingras ended the day with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sinn.

"Nicholls is a very aggressive team," said Brochu.  "The goal for today was to be very solid. You don't fight fire with fire all the time, so we had to be smart, and we had to be aggressive. At the same time, we had to keep the rallies longer, and we knew that eventually, they wouldn't be able to stand the whole rally with us. I think the guys played awesome, but what's even better is winning three good matches in two days. First, it shows that we're in shape. We've been doing a lot of conditioning, and today, I didn't see one guy dragging his feet. I didn't see one guy looking tired. Physically, I think we are in top shape. Mentally, I think they were able to be solid today. Weekends like this are always a good test, especially early in the season. I thought we did awesome."

South Alabama returns to action next Saturday with a home match against Auburn at 1:00 p.m.
