MEN’S TENNIS TOPS INTRASTATE FOE UAB 4-1 ON THE ROAD

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of South Alabama No. 28 men's tennis team (12-2) defeated UAB (5-3) 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.  The Jaguars have now won 11-straight matches to continue the fourth-largest winning streak in program history.

"UAB played a great match," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "They fought hard even after we started winning matches and made us win it in 3 sets."

The Jags claimed the doubles point with wins on court No. 1 and No. 2.  Senior Juan Cruz Soria (San Juan, Argentina) and freshman Loic Cloes (Remicourt, Belgium) defeated Tim Dollman and Stefan Gonzalez 6-4 on the first court, and junior Oliver Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) and freshman Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) topped Christian Coetzee and Eric Komati 6-3 on the second court.

"Doubles was excellent for us," said Brochu.  "We got two early breaks at No. 1 and No. 2 and just held serves until we clinched the doubles point."

Soria grabbed the first singles point for South Alabama with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Komati on court No. 1.  Coetzee got the Blazers' first and only point with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Marzol on court No. 3.  Senior Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) then defeated Dollman 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 on court No. 2, and sophomore Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France) clinched the match for the Jags with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Anru Fourie.

"We continued to put the pressure on them in singles taking the lead on 4 courts, but UAB fought," said Brochu. "Some of guys got nervous and we drop a few sets and had to dig in to pull a few three-set wins."

In uncompleted matches Gingras on court No. 4 was in a second set (6-7 (4), 6-6) with Gonzalez, and Cloes was slightly ahead in his match on court No. 5 against Kenton Parton 6-1, 6-7 (7), 5-4.

"This weekend showed us that we still have to work harder even though we have had good success since the beginning of the season," said Brochu.

The Jags return to the court next week with the HEB Invitational in Corpus-Christi, Texas that begins on Friday and ends on Saturday.
