MEN’S TENNIS CONTINUES WIN STREAK, BLANKS PAIR OF OPPONENTS

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team swept Jacksonville State and Jackson State, 4-0 and 7-0, respectively, Thursday at the Mobile Tennis Center.

The Jags improve to 9-2 on the season as they continue their eight-match win streak.

In doubles against Jacksonville State, freshman Loic Cloes (Remicourt, Belgium) and junior Oliver Gingras (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) opened with a 6-2 win over Jaryd Reese and Austin McCormick on court No. 1. Senior Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and freshman Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) clinched the doubles point by defeating Pablo Caffarena and Paolo Cucalon 6-4 at No. 2.

"This match could have been much harder if we would have let the doubles point slip," said USA head coach Nick Brochu.

Jacobs started singles by downing Reese 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, and Cloes gave the Jaguars a 3-0 lead when he bested Mathias Chaim 6-3, 6-2 on court No. 6. Sophomore Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux, France) secured the victory for the Jags with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over Guillermo Agost at No. 5.

"It was a good match," Brochu said. "JSU fought really hard, even when we had the lead."

Against Jackson State in doubles, Cloes and Gingras swept Vishu Prasad and Joan Sanson 6-0 at No. 1, and Jacobs and Marzol defeated Alawi Andrey and Federico Mendieta Ruiz 6-1 on court No. 2 to secure the doubles point.

"We had good energy in doubles," said Brochu. "The guys did great and took care of business."

In singles, Marzol swept Ryan Swanier 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, and Gonzalez dropped Mendieta 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 4 to put the Jags up 3-0. Cloes clinched the victory for USA with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Stylianos Gkontsaris at No. 5.

"The goal this afternoon was to keep the momentum, not to slow down even when winning," Brochu said.

In other singles action, Gingras bested Fritz Jacobs 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3, Jacobs defeated Alawi 6-1, 7-5 on court No. 1, and senior Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) won 6-3, 6-4 over Prasad at No. 6.

The Jaguars return to the court Sunday at noon to face North Florida on the road.
