MEN'S TENNIS GETS FOURTH AT FLORIDA STATE INVITATIONAL

Tallahassee, Fla. - University of South Alabama men's tennis team fell to Troy 4-2 Sunday at the Florida State Invitational to earn fourth-place.

In doubles, senior Tuki Jacobs (Windhoek, Namibia) and freshman Clement Marzol (Toulouse, France) swept Amer Bedwan and Filip Mansson 6-0 at spot No. 3. At the No. 1 court, freshman Lois Cloes (Remicourt, Belgium) and senior Juan Cruz Soria (San Juan, Argentina) fell 6-4 to Andy Lau and Pablo Moreno, and junior Lucas Gonzalez (Chateauroux,  France) and senior Pierre Noyon (Oye-Plage, France) lost to Andre Baldo and Hassan Ndayishimiye 6-3 at No. 2.

"Today was hard and very frustrating," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "Troy played some solid doubles, and we came up short."

In singles, Troy jumped out to a 3-0 lead with wins at court Nos. 4 and 6. Moreno defeated Noyon 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, and Gonzalez fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 to Bedwan.

"In singles, it was hard to accept that we were only competitive on four courts," Brochu said.  "We didn't have all six players competing at the levels they are capable of, and that makes it tough to win."

The Jags fought back when Soria dropped Mustapha Belcora 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot, and Cloes bested Jaiqi Duan 6-2, 6-4 at court No. 5.

Luy secured the Troy victory with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Morzol at No. 3.

Jacobs was up 7-6 (6), 1-1 at No. 1 in unfinished play.

"Overall in the tournament, I was happy with the level of play that we gave," said Brochu.  "Soria was outstanding with two great wins the past two days and was undefeated in the tournament.  Obviously I was not happy about the way we ended things today, but we know what needs fixed and have two weeks to work on it in practice."

The Jaguars return to action Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. for their home opener against Charlotte.
