SOCCER LOOKS TO BUILD OFF BIG WIN, GOES TO AUSTIN PEAY AND OLE MISS

MOBILE, Ala. – The biggest win in school history on Monday just means the University of South Alabama soccer team can't let the result get to its head before a weekend road trip to Austin Peay and Ole Miss.

Both matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The Jaguars will take on the Governors on Friday and the Rebels on Sunday. Each game can be seen online; Friday's clash will be on OVCDigitalNetwork.com and Sunday's will be shown on SEC Network+.

"It's about making sure the girls put all of their attention on our performances; that's why we talk about performances over results," USA head coach Graham Winkworth said. "We weren't focused on beating Florida State as much as we were focused on putting in the right performance against them and hoping the result takes care of itself.

"This weekend will be two very different and difficult games. Austin Peay is now playing a team that just beat Florida State so they're going to be fired up."

South Alabama (3-2-1) split two matches last weekend, dropping a heartbreaking 2-1 decision to Mississippi State before earning its first-ever win over a ranked opponent against No. 1 Florida State. The Jags edged the Seminoles 1-0 on a first-half goal from Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) and a sterling defensive effort led by SBC Defensive Player of the Week Hannah Godfrey (Thornton-Cleveleys, England).

"Coach (Mark) Krikorian was extremely classy with the result and his analysis of the game on their web site," Winkworth said. "It was a huge confidence boost for us because that's a program that we strive to emulate. It was a complete team effort, and not just from the players on the pitch; the competition for places is really pushing people on game day.

"As I keep stressing to the girls, different players are suited for different games. We made three or four changes to the lineup, like Emily (Farrell), who didn't play a minute against Mississippi State, but didn't leave the field against Florida State because it was the type of game that she is suited for. That proved to be the case and she had a good game. The importance of our depth isn't just about who's playing better at the time at practice, it's about each game and everybody needs to be ready for when their time comes."

Hannah's goal was the 33rd of her career, breaking a tie for third in school history with Tanya Allegretti, leaving Hannah two shy of a tie for second with Brandi Smith. Hannah also passed Smith for fourth at USA with 78 career points, three away from Hilla Rantala in third.

Austin Peay won its first three games of the season, but has dropped its last two, albeit on the road to Western Kentucky in overtime and Lipscomb.

"They've played some good teams," Winkworth noted. "Western Kentucky and Lipscomb are both strong programs in the soccer world. We obviously know about Western Kentucky from their time in the Sun Belt and Lipscomb has beaten two SEC programs this season. So those two defeats aren't as bad as maybe they look on paper. They're a team that likes to play soccer, they have some pace and quality, and I think there will be some goals in the game. Hopefully we can do our best to limit their opportunities. They are a good team that's going forward, so our defense needs to be ready just like they were on Monday night."

Kirsten Robertson has hit the back of the net a team-best four times for the Governors, and recorded the match-winning scores in the first two games of the season. The four goals have come on just 10 shots.

Ole Miss advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament last season and enters the weekend with a 4-2 record, having outscored the opposition 11-5. The Rebels are outshooting their opponents 120-35, with a 65-17 edge on net.

"They'll be a team that goes again to the NCAA Tournament," Winkworth said. "They return a good core of their players, particularly their offensive weapons. They're very dangerous going forward. (CeCe) Kizer, who usually plays in the hole, she's extremely talented, and their front two of (Addie) Forbus and (Gretchen) Harknett are deadly weapons. Our backline is going to have to be 100 percent ready for what will be one of the most difficult challenges they face this season."

The key to the Rebel offense is Forbus, who has a team-high seven goals on the season, and ranks 10th in Division I in goals per game (1.17) and 11th in points (2.50). She scored a brace in Ole Miss' wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, Northwestern State and Lipscomb, and assisted on the only goal of the contest against Troy on Sunday.

"Her movement off the ball is excellent," Winkworth stated. "She's not just fast, she's quick in small distances. If you don't know where she is at all times, she'll be gone, and she knows where the goal is. One of the most difficult things to do in our sport is not just taking good shots, but can you finish? She's a finisher. She'll definitely be one that we need to pay close attention to for 90 minutes and possibly more."
