LA JOLLA, Calif. – A pair of seniors had top-10 finishes in invitational events at the Triton Invitational for the University of South Alabama men's track and program Saturday at Triton Track & Field Stadium.
Jan-Louw Kotze was the top collegiate performer in the discus after recording a mark of 61.75m on his third attempt, less than half a meter shy of his career-best mark set three weeks prior. Â He was seventh overall in the final standings.
"Jan-Louw did well, he was competing against several Olympians," said Jaguar head coach Paul Brueske. Â "His neck started bothering him a little bit in the finals or I think he would have gotten a PR. Â But he did have several throws over 59 meters, so his series of throws was probably the best he has done."
Renaldo Frechou finished third in a field of 45 competitors in the hammer throw, posting a 61.95m mark on his first try. Â It's the sixth time the senior has recorded a top-five result this spring.
"It was a little bit off for Renaldo, he had a couple of fouls where I think if he could have released the implement a hair sooner it would have been a long throw," Brueske. Â "He really didn't throw that far comparatively speaking to his other performances, but I think he was real close to having a breakthrough performance. Â There were a couple of fouls that went into the net that were released a little too late, but I think he will fix that in the meets to come."
