MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team will close its home season this weekend as they take on two teams as a part of the Jaguars Invitational this weekend at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
Play begins Friday at 2 p.m. with a rematch against Alabama-Birmingham, hoping to avenge a loss Sunday in the MT Shootout. On Sunday at 10:30 a.m., the Jaguars square off against No. 50 Old Dominion.
On Sunday, the program will honors its three seniors –
Gerhard Gruindelingh (Pretoria, South Africa),
Tim Srkala (Brno, Czech Republic) and
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) – in a ceremony prior to the match.
"This is a big weekend for our seniors," said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. "These are our last two matches at home, and we're going to have Senior Day on Sunday. They all play major roles on the team, and I'm looking forward to seeing them have fun this weekend."
Last weekend, USA dropped three straight matches in the MT Shootout, two of which were against nationally-ranked opponents.
"Last weekend was really hard, but we didn't want to just look at coming back 0-3," said Brochu. "This week we are working a lot on closing sets and playing shorter games."
Friday's match marks the sixth time in five years the Jags and the Blazers will have met. South Alabama has won three out of the last five meetings despite dropping the previous meeting this year. Alabama-Birmingham currently has a record of 11-7.
"We just played UAB less than a week ago, and UAB was impressive," Brochu said. "This is probably their best team they've had in the past five years. We were pretty upset that we lost to them because we definitely had opportunities to win, so it's going to come down to taking advantage of those opportunities. Last time we played, we didn't, and it's going to be another big battle."
Old Dominion enters the weekend with a 14-4 record, winning 12 of their last 13 contests. Last season, the Jaguars and the Monarchs split a pair of matches, and the Jaguars have won five of the last eight meetings.
"They are having a great year," said Brochu. "They are ranked pretty high this year, and they have great results. Hopefully having a northern team coming down here to play outside will be to our advantage. I think the doubles point is going to be very important because if you win the doubles point, you carry some momentum over to singles. "
