SOFTBALL VISITS UAB ON TUESDAY

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama softball travels to Birmingham on Tuesday to face Conference USA foe UAB at Mary Bowers Field at 4 p.m.

USA (14-10, 3-2 SBC) opened the 2016 season with a 4-0 defeat of the Blazers in Mobile on Feb. 11. The Jaguars outhit, UAB, 7-4, and used a three-run fifth inning to pull ahead. USA sophomore Devin Brown struck out 11 Blazer batters in a complete-game effort.
 
South Alabama brings a four-game winning streak into Tuesday's in-state clash after defeating Southern Miss, 5-1, in Hattiesburg last Wednesday and sweeping Louisiana-Monroe in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series over the weekend at Jaguar Field.
 
Brown picked up the win against USM with 11 strikeouts before one-hitting ULM in game one on Saturday and then throwing her first career perfect game to secure the sweep of the Warhawks on Sunday. For her efforts, Brown received SBC Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the second time this year.
 
The Mobile, Ala., native currently ranks third in the NCAA in strikeouts per seven innings (11.4), fourth in shutouts (5) and sixth in strikeouts (146). Fellow Mobile native Emily Messer, the Jags' senior third baseman, owns the fifth-best batting average (0.524), in the country.
 
USA is batting .293 as a team, with a .386 slugging percentage and .381 on-base percentage. The Jaguar pitching staff owns a 2.68 collective ERA, led by Brown's team-low 1.87. Destin Vicknair is 6-3 with a 3.17 ERA and 54 strikeouts to a mere 18 walks in 57 1/3 innings pitched.
 
UAB (10-17, 2-1 CUSA) recently clinched its series versus Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, winning Sunday's rubber match, 3-2, behind 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief by sophomore Megan Smith. The Blazers fell in the opening contest of the series, 6-3, before winning game two, 7-1.
 
JoJo Fallen leads the Blazers at the plate with a .394 average and team-highs in slugging percentage (.577) and on-base percentage (.463). Caitlin Attfield leads in hits (32) and stolen bases (7-for-8). UAB is batting .249 overall, and the Blazer pitching staff owns a 5.04 collective ERA.
 
USA is 10-2 all-time versus UAB. The Blazers are 0-2 at home, while USA is 1-3 on the road this year.
