MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women's tennis team will look to extend an unbeaten home swing Saturday when Samford comes to the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis courts.
First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Jags, ranked No. 39 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, have dropped just two points in taking the first three matches of the homestand, defeating Louisiana Tech and North Florida 6-1, and Virginia Commonwealth 6-0.
"We're starting to play some really good tennis, and that's good to see as we get deeper into the season," USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. "Samford is a good team; we play them every year at their fall tournament and we're going to have to play some good tennis to get a win."
South Alabama will bring a three-match win streak and a 13-4 record into Saturday's match, while holding a 9-2 advantage in the series between the two schools. The Jags snapped a two-match skid to the Bulldogs last year with a 5-2 victory in Mobile.
Freshman
Alexandria Stiteler (Bradenton, Fla.) is the current Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week – her fourth conference honor of the season – after winning all three matches in straight sets over the reporting period. She has won 13 matches in a row and is 12-1 at the top flight.
Stiteler isn't the only Jaguar with a double-digit win streak, as junior
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) has won 11 matches in a row, and is second on the team behind Stiteler with 12 victories this spring and 19 overall.
"She's been getting better every single year, and that's something we like to think we do over here," Keyser said. "That's exciting to see when players improve year by year."
Samford (5-7) has won two of its last three matches since dropping three in a row to end February. Savannah Wood has a team-best seven wins at the No. 5 flight.
Carita Moolman and
Jessica Northcutt are 7-4 at No. 1 doubles.
"Top to bottom, they're very well coached and play good doubles," Keyser said. "They play the points very well, so it's one of those matches where you're going to have to go out and execute and play a full 2-3 hour match in order to have success."
