MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama men's tennis team will travel to Florida for road contests Monday and Tuesday.
The Jaguars will take on NCAA Division II Rollins on Sunday at 9 a.m. CDT, and former Sun Belt Conference rival Florida Atlantic Monday at 1 p.m. CDT
South Alabama (10-7) is coming off a fifth-place finish at the 50th Annual H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas. After dropping the opener to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Jags edged DePaul 4-3 and blanked Texas-Rio Grande Valley 4-0.
Senior
Juan Troglia (Mendoza, Argentina) improved to 7-5 in singles and 5-3 in doubles after combining for a 4-0 record last weekend, and helped clinch the match against DePaul with a 6-4 doubles win at No. 2.
Rollins, ranked No. 26 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, started the season 0-8 before getting its first win of the season today, 8-1 vs. Wayne State. Six of the Tars' first eight opponents were ranked in the top 30.
Anton Bettink (3-5 at No. 1) and
Patrick Sell (1-6 at No. 2) are ranked Nos. 4 and 44, respectively. As a duo, they are No. 11 nationally in doubles.
"This is an important trip for us," USA head coach
Nick Brochu said. "First, we don't want to look past Rollins. They are an established tennis program. I believe having a strong start will give us the necessary momentum to close the match quick. When playing in hot and humid temperatures and playing matches on back-to-back days, it is important not to stay on the court longer than you need to."
On Tuesday, the former conference rivals will meet for the sixth time in their history, with the Jaguars holding a 3-2 advantage. USA eliminated FAU from the SBC Tournament in 2011 and 2012.
The Owls have alternated wins and losses in their last five outings, but are coming off a 5-2 victory over Richmond today.
Zandrix Acob is a team-best 11-4 at flights 3-5, while
Remi Chancerel and
Ignacio Jimenez are both 10-4.
"FAU will be the main challenge of this trip," Brochu said. "They are having their best season in probably five years. They had ranked wins this year and will be a big challenge for us in Boca. All eight of our players need to step up. We are the favorites on paper, but that doesn't mean anything. Winning the doubles to set the tone against FAU will be key."
